Even though we do not have every word from Christ, we have the words necessary to determine God's commands and the way of salvation for us. That alone is more than enough for us in our daily living.
Surely there are many things that Jesus said, and if they were recorded, all the books in the world could not contain them. Translated to today's language--all the PDA's, mp3 players, iPods and recording devices could not contain the richness and depth of God's word.

Not certain if it is a shame or not. It does seem likely that his words were not perfectly preserved...much of what is written was collected many years after the fact, with little in the way of verification as to where it really came from. Imagine trying to read a writing that is say 100 yrs old today that comes from Britain. How much of it would be directly understood? What nuances of change in the language would have to be figured out? Then, move it back further centuries and change the language to Greek, Hebrew, etc. It would seem impossible that some portion of it would be changed through time.
Many will say that the Bible, for example, is the inspired word of God, and unchanged over the years...yet today we have many different translations, in many different languages, and there are significant differences in how they are understood. So, if we have this struggle today with the same information all at the same time, imagine what it would be spread out over 20 centuries, across several languages of authoritative text.
Some gosepls were not included in the Bible. For example, the Gospel of Thomas was not included, nor were the gospels of Bartholomew or Nicodemus. The Bible that we have today is a boiled down version of writings that were cherry picked by some of the worst bandits in history hundreds of years after the fact.
The words of Jesus are important, even so. Even with all that has been done is his name in 2000 years, if people would pay attention to what HE said to do, and placed emphasis on what HE valued, instead of what Paul apparently went on to say after the crucifixion (and what I can only imagine as a kind of subsequent madness of Paul), then we would be very much better off indeed.
Important words of Christ:
''My dear little ones, take heed to My words and assist Me with spreading these messages from every valley and mountaintop for I come to you out of great love and mercy.”
Note, he does not ask that we heed Pauls words...he asks to heed to HIS words....
Also, as far as the comment about Timothy 3:16 goes, what it says is ALL scripture...not what's in the bible. Timothy had no idea what the Bible would end up to be...he was writing in the "now" of that time. It would be hundreds of years before what we have as the bible today would be defined. What Timothy 3:16 really does tell us is that ALL scripture is given from God...not just the stuff that was selected by a vast array of church officials who were, we must remember, also extremely involved in the politics of the day...these people make current concerns of the involvement of religion in politics absolutely laughable. I don't see how anyone could believe, after all these years, that what we have is complete and accurate. It simply flies in the face of eons of human nature.

There's internal evidence in the texts of the gospels that they were based in part on a "source document" that probably consisted of a collection of the sayings of Jesus, taken down by various disciples during his lifetime.
The "Sermon on the Mount," however, is not original - the entire thing is to be found in the Talmud.

It's possible that he did give other sermons, but at 2 Timothy 3:16,17 it tells us that what the Bible contains as a whole is all we need for insight and wisdom. It would have been exciting to actually be there for his sermon on the Mount. :)

Yeah, that would have been awesome. But as the disciples said in the Gospels, there wouldn't be enough paper to record everything He taught, or every miracle He performed.

True.
But think of it this way. Mortal life is short and you can choose to spend eternity finding out how cool Christ is. Just have to believe....

That is true, but I believe we have all we need in the Bible, but also if we need more help we can always pray and ask.
