A lot of atheists use the Internet to voice their views. If they do it in real life, people freak out and act like they just grew two horns and a pointy tail.
Also, many (rightly) feel that the atheistic view does not get properly represented, and that many religious people have screwed up views about who they are and what they believe. Therefore, they come on board to set the record straight.
And for the record, even though atheists make up 10% of the US population, they only make up 0.2% of the US prision population. Chew on that. ; )

How do all these percentages come about when no one EVER asks ME???? I mean I don't know ANYONE who was ever asked for some sort of report whether they were christian or atheist.. so HOW do they get these percentages? Off the top of ones' HEAD? I would have to guess that a LOT larger percentage of the US population is agnostic leaning towards atheism... I, myself... I tend to classify myself as a WANNA... I WANNA believe but I'm not sure WHAT is true and what is fiction and I WANNA KNOW, but I won't know till I die.....and maybe not even then..... And, I would say a lot of atheists are on R & S here because they have the right to be just like anyone else... and prossibly because there IS more then 10% of the population that are atheists...

Why do Christians make up 90% of the R&S population? I can make up statistics too. Look around for questions and answers by other religions - you'll only rarely find a Muslim and I've never seen a Bhuddist or Hindu. Why? That just reflects the population of the US, which is what most subscribers here are. Stop picking on atheists.

Since the proportion of atheist increases with education level and intelligence I can only conclude that the majority of Christians are too dumb to use a computer.
Or the information that atheists are only 10% of the population is wrong.

I personally think that its only these specific Atheists that need to voice it. The atheists that I know in real life are not very verbal or argumentative about it they just say "I dont believe in God" and leave it at that, usually with a "But whatever works for you" added at the end. But there are some very passionate Atheists and a place like this would draw them.

Atheists are still unable to speak openly about their views at work and in most social settings. If I told everyone at my job that I was not a Christian, I could be fired. For me, Yahoo R & S is the only place I can express my opinions.

I think it's because the anything-goes atmosphere is more conductive to atheists than to religious people, who are generally suggested by their elders and religious superiors to stay within their own group. To most atheists there is nothing appealing about an atheist forum, but to most christians a christian forum is very appealing. Something like that. I'm not sure, it is a bit of a puzzle...

The latest statistic I heard is that only 2% of the U.S. population claims to be atheists. I've been wondering why the percentage of atheists on here seems much higher too!!!

some people on here don't really know what they beleive yet so they answer like an atheist but they haven't matured enough to form a long lasting opinion yet and alot of those late teen early 20-something folks don't have jobs and have nothing better to do than sleep and eat on their parents dime and play on the computer while there parents are out busting butt to keep them in food and electricity
