Michael R is totally right...Chiropractors are not real doctors in the way we think of a medical doctor. They are not trained to properly assess all the body systems to figure out the exact cause of pain. The ones with experience and who truly care for their patients health know when they need to refer out a patient to get further medical evaluation. They are qualified to provide mobilizations of joints to correct mal-alignment but many tend to over-reach and try to treat conditions which they are completely incapable of treating, and in the process do more harm than good. If you can find a good, honest one with much experience then they can be competent healthcare professionals...problem is there seem to be more bad ones than good ones.

I have used chiropractors twice and in both times, I came out injured. Despite the title "Doctor", they are not trained in medicine so they cannot recognize illness-caused pain and many feel that all pain is caused by mis located areas on the spine. They will often make you feel better and relaxed after a session but they cannot cure illness. That could delay recognition of a disease until it is too late.
I remember one chiropractor giving free evaluations at a mall. A woman in a white outfit (to give the impression of being a nurse) handed questionnaires to the people on line. When they were examined, the chiropractor first looked at the form, and then checked the back. He was gentle most of the time but would dig his finger in at certain spots. At the end, he would explain that the pain at each spot was related to a problem with the patient, such as allergies. The victim would be so surprised that the chiropractor could figure this out by just touching his back, forgetting that he had provided that information just a few minutes earlier. He was then signed up for 3 sessions a week for the next 6 months. I got on the line and told the "nurse" that I had no illnesses, pains, allergies, etc. My back was checked with gentle pressure, except for one spot. I was told that it was tension and that I should sign up for 3 times a week for 6 months. I asked the chiropractor if he knew what was in the large brown envelope that I was carrying. Of course he didn't. I announced that it was X-ray images of my back and that it showed one vertebra to be 3/4 inch out of position and the next one 1/2 inch out. I had been in a bad car wreck. He had no answer as to why he missed them. Long story short - they are not trained in true medicine.

Some people swear by them, but I have never had a helpful experience. Maybe I am not in the right frame of mind, especially being a scientist; but I have seen recommended chiropractors over my life for my arthritis pain, and I cannot say anything ever helped. I doubt I will ever see another one, and instead, I eat right and exercise all my problem joints to keep flexible.

I've been going to a chiropractor for years and they help me. Even the pain mgmt doctor says "whatever works". Some people are totally against them, but I find that they can fix me quicker in some cases, like with migraines and my bad neck. But I can understand why some people won't see a chiropractor as well.

Though I've never had an experience myself, when I was younger once my aunt brought us to her chiropractor appointment and watched. She seemed to enjoy it, as it relieved a lot of tension.
I can't personally speak for lack of experience, but my dad cautioned me of going to one, saying sometimes even the professionals can worsen the tensions rather than relieve them.
Hope that helps.

I hate to say it but if you go once you will always feel like you need to go. It takes away the problems but doesn't fix them so in a few weeks you will want/need to go back so that they can work there magic.

Yes, I think they do. I have never been to one myself, but my friend has, and says it really helped with her back.
