All I can think when I see him dressed as 'Edna' in an ad for "Hairspray" is, "Oh... There's John Travolta in a fat suit wearing a wig and a prosthetic face." o_o

I find it creepy simply because the intent of Edna in the stage musical was ALWAYS that the man playing the role NOT affect a female voice. This was so that no one would be seen as trying to imitate the wonderfully inimitable Divine.

For heavens sake, the first Edna on Broadway was the gravel-voiced Harvey Fierstein! I saw him do the role in NY, and saw Bruce Vilanch on tour. Frankly, Fierstein should have done the film -- he was sublimely funny onstage, and he has enough of a "name" from his film work. Oy...

Then again, I'm judging Travolta solely on the television commercials. So, when I see the film this weekend, I'll do so with an open mind -- though I can already tell from the commercials that his dialect is utterly NOT anything you'd find in Baltimore.

Well, not creeped out.. and I have been HUGE Travolta fan forever.... (Im 38) But it surprised me, kinda.. but remember he played skinny 'Fat Bastard' in Austin Powers..... John Travolta is a very serious, talented actor, and he has a GREAT sense of humor, and has played several 'crazy' roles over the years.....so this role is just another tap into the sense of humor side... nothing creepy!! LOL I thought it was funny!!! Kinda Eddie Murphyish!??? LOL PS.... John Travolta is a rich, famous actor and there is more to him than JUST acting, and he can pick and choose roles he wants and turn down the ones he doesnt care for... He is that up there now in his standings!!!

Hey, hairspray was awesome. John travolta only plays edna to make his role more comical.

Kind of like Rocky Horror Picture Show Vs. Hairspray...

When you are as much of a man as John Travolta and have the money and the beautiful wife he does...you can do ANYTHING you want.

I should hope you're the only one. I haven't seen Hairspray, only the preview, but it sounds like good fun. How about Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire? That comedy went down in history (of our times) as being one of the greatest! What exactly is your problem?

Every gay man in America is disgusted by this. It's an iconic role for a gay performer and he stole it from them because he had more pull at the studios. Naturally he destroyed the role. You should see it performed on Broadway where it's done correctly. Yes, I live in NYC.
