no way i think more girls should take it. I've been doing karagte for almost 4 years and for a while i was the onloy girl there in class. I'm still one of the top in my class but hey whoever said that martial arts is for guys is as dumb as the person who said that 2+2=9

Not at all. Besides the obvious health benefits of working out and giving them some self-defense skills there are a number of others. As they rise in rank they sometimes are given certain responsibilities like leading the class in exercises and warm-ups. If competing they learn how to be more aggressive when and as needed. They can also learn the value of partnership and working with other students to practice and develop their skills and their partners for testing and promotion. Martial arts can give them opportunities to learn and develop and better prepare them for future challenges like college and careers in the outside world.

More often then not, Its a great idea! Just from my own experience, girls are more comfortable doing some martial arts then others. Any kind of ground fighting can be quite uncomfortable if it is a mixed class (guys and girls. when you are fighting on the ground, it is very hard to avoid hands going in places that can cause tension, if you get what I mean), but general striking and stand up Jui-Jitsu is great for women (for everyone really!)!
That said, I know one girl who despite the aforementioned isusues practices Brazilian Jui-Jitsu (a ground fighting technique) and loves it (and though I have trained with her, we have never sparred. In fact, I have never seen her spar with anyone.)

In terms of It teaching discipline, self-confidence no its great for that. In terms of self-defense, the truth is a gun is the ultimate balancer. Martial arts is not going to save you from a bullet.

I agree with all the answers above me and will add, Girls are some of My best Students. For some reason the seem to be better at it than MOST BOYS. And easier to teach.

Absolutely not! Empower yourself with inner and outer strength. You will also learn discipline and control. There is never anything wrong with a woman bettering herself and being able to defend herself, especially in this day and age. We women need to be able to defend ourselves from the criminals out there.

There is nothing wrong with a girl learning to defend herself, or even prize-fight for that matter.
