About two weeks ago we discovered a golf-ball sized lump on my dog's front right leg. It just popped up overnight! We took her to the vet immediately and the ran some tests on the lump and she has cancer. She has x-rays tomorrow to see if it spread and if we should do a Mass Removal. I didn't get a chance to really talk to the vet for long otherwise I would have asked him. Is there anything in particular that could've caused this to happen? Something we did or didn't do? Or is it a lot like when humans get cancer and sometimes it just happens to certain dogs/animals?

First of all I want to say I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I lost a Dobie to cancer & so did my daughter. Ask your vet if it is Osteosarcoma. Here is a couple sites that may give you a little info http://www.vet.uga.edu/vpp/clerk/Kramer/ & http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=28&cat=1638&articleid=465 You can also just search the web by typing in osteosarcoma in dogs. I do not think there is a known cause to cancer in dogs just as in humans. Yes they say humans get cancer by cigarettes, but I know people that has had cancer & never did smoke.

I am so sorry to hear your Dog has Cancer. My thoughts are with you and your dog.

Who knows? Enviroment, genetics, breed? Certain breeds are more likely to develope Cancer like Golden Retrievers. I have had 2 of my Goldens die from Cancer. They both died from different types of cancer too. Some cancers are more aggresive then others. Some respond better to treatment, some matastisize to other parts of the body.

With what you are saying Osteosarcoma (bone Cancer)comes to mind. It is usually found in their shoulder, elbow or wrist. Not always does a lump occur though. It is more common in large breed dogs cause the larger bones in their legs grow at a faster rate.

My puppy that passed in December had cancer - the dog version of HPV. She had horrible loose bowel movements for about a month and we couldn't figure out where it was coming from. We changed her food and it stopped. We took her to the vet and he couldn't find anything wrong with her. Then she got a growth on her mouth that bled profusely all the time. We had it removed and the vet expected a full recovery. Not even a full week after the growth was removed, it grew back bigger than before. We took her back into the vet and he told us it was the doggie version of HPV and he wanted to put her down. My mom took her in alone at the time and she didn't want to have Baby (the puppy) put down without my family saying goodbye to her. The vet removed the growth again and we took her home and said goodbye to her and when my mom took her into be euthanized (put to sleep) 4 days later, the growth was grown back full size again. She was put to sleep on December 6th... My mom asked another vet, a friend of ours about it and he said that it's spread from the mommy dog to the puppy when it's born and it grows up that way. Sometimes there's an outbreak within the puppy's body if its immune system breaks down for whatever reason or it'll never show up. We never know about these things. I'm very sorry.

Good luck =]

The main causes are thought to be environment (smog) and food. Talk to your vet tomorrow - there are diets recommended specifically for dogs with cancer. They're high in protein, low in carbs and do make a difference. If your fortunate enough to have a holistic vet, get their recommendations on what to feed your dog.

It does sometimes just happen - but it can also be breed related. Golden retrievers, followed by boxers, have the highest incidence of cancer in the U.S. It's not anything you did or didn't do. I wish you all the very best for your dog!!

some environmental issue can cause cancer (do u live in city pollution etc) but it's usually just a genetic mutation, it's nothing you did or didn't do. Sorry to hear about ur dog :(

If the dog's Dame and Sire has a history of Cancer, than more than liklely, it runs through the bloodlines. Just like with humans, if it runs in the family, you could possibly get it.
