family history. i'm having a hard time finding her.?

Question

I'm sitting here with my grandmom
she really wants to know the story of her grandmother.
She thinks maybe something happened over in Messina (Southern Italy) that caused her grandmother to leave.
She knows she came over to Ellis Island in her 30's
and sent here son's joseph and thomas (franco) before her.
If you guys could help
and give me any information you find on Angela Visalli from Messina Italy (southern italy) that'd be such a great help!!
Also,
my grandmom would like to know where her grandmother was burried. are there any sites to find that out?? Thanks so much guys =]]

Ancestry.com----is a good place to start
Ask Grandmother many many questions listen and record anything she tells you. Ask for birth dates even approximate Ask about names of Great Grands and Aunts and Uncles any name and relationship of those names to each other.
When you start finding Angela Visala from Messina -you may be surprised at how many there were !
ask about things that were happening in the world during the times she remembers.
Ellis Island has a site ---ask for dates as near as she can remember -names of ships would help too., or the names of the cities of departure.

I can't find an Angela. There are 10 Visali on the immigration list through the Port of New York. Among those 10, there are 3 Guiseppe. One born abt 1893 in Caserta,
Another born abt 1875 in Santepidico, and the other born about 1887, doesn't say where.

There are census records for a family in Syracuse in 1910 & 1920.

I have a friend whose father and his family came from Sicily and her mother and her family came from Calabria. She said she has found a lot of information on her family at the National Archives in Washington. She said when you originally go there you have to go through some red tape to get in and they provide you with a badge. However, after that all you need is your badge.

Actually, she said she found more at the National Archives than a cousin of hers found going to Italy.

Also was Visali her maiden name? If so, what was her name when she died?

If she was on Social Security at the time of death and drawing off her own social security number, you might find her on the Social Security Death Index. Rootsweb(free site) has it. You don't need her social security number, even though you see a blank for it. Just her name as it was listed on social security. Her death certificate would tell you where she was buried.
