I'm turning 16 in two months and ever since I was 13 my dad has been telling me he will buy me a car for my 16th birthday. Between 13 and 16 my parents ended up getting a divorce but my dad still insisted he was buying me that car as long as I had good grades and was deserving of it etc. So like I said my birthday is rolling around here in almost exactly two months and my dad told me since I don't live with him he can't pay my car insurance.
So is it true? Can my dad pay for my car insurance even if I don't live with him?

if the insurance is in your name he can give you cash and you can deposit it into a joint bank account with your dad (since your not 18), and write a check for the insurance. Tell him he can pay for mine too!

There are two separate issues that are getting confused.

If you lived at same residence as father, then there can be insurance policy for the household, in which there is a cost of adding you to the auto insurance.

Living in a different household, you cannot be on the same insurance policy as your father.

Insurance for a teen is expensive.
Insurance for ONLY a teen is VERY espensive.

Let's suppose dear old Dad is now paying $ 500 a year for auto insurance.
Adding you to that insurance might increase that to $ 2,000.00 a year & maybe he can afford that.

Buying a separate insurance policy JUST for you, might cost $ 3,000.00 a year (this is separate from $ 500.00 that dear old Dad is now paying.

Maybe Dad can afford to pay the $ 3,500 total per year for auto insurance for you & him, maybe not.

Maybe he can pay PART of the cost, and you pay part of the cost.

You see there are the two issues.
Can Dad include you on HIS auto insurance?
Only if you are in same household.

Can Dad write the check that is to go to the insurance company? Well it is a matter of what he can afford. I would think that if he can afford to buy you a car, he can afford this.

Where are you living?
If it is with dear sweet Mom, and if SHE has auto insurance, maybe you can get yourself added to HER insurance.

Would dear old Dad pay the increase burden on Mom due to you on Mom's insurance? Well that depends on how well Dad & Mom are getting along.

These are my thoughts on what is happening. Your Dad was going to buy you a car and have it in his name. He would also pay the insurance for you as a rider on his policy. Now that you no longer live with him, he would be paying a LOT more to give you a car and pay the insurance. At your age, you cannot have your own insurance policy and he probably cannot insure you under his policy while you live elsewhere.

Your dad probably saw how much it was going to cost him and changed his mind. maybe it costs a lot more if you don't live together. Find a car thats cheaper to insure(boring old fart type car) and maybe he'll change his mind.

AS LONG AS THE CAR INSURANCE IS IN YOUR NAME OTHERWISE YOU AND YOUR DAD WILL BE COMMITTING FRAUD.
