The best choice for you depends on what you want to use the language for.

If you're just learning for fun and don't intend to use the language much in real life, I'd advise you to decide purely on which language you find more enjoyable to speak and study. Best Buy sells $10 language learning CDs from EuroTalk/Talk Now!/TOPICS Entertainment that are great for starting latin-alphabet languages. You can also download sample softwear from byki.com that will give you a good taste of the sound of both languages. Nobody but you can tell you which language you enjoy more :)

If you're learning the language because you are the scholarly type, consider what subjects you like the most. French has a tradition of visual art, including fashion and film. German is more known for history and philosophy. Both countries are known for producing quality literature. Would you be more fascinated by WWII-era German newspapers as they were originally published or by French independent films? Would you rather read The Three Musketeers and Les Miserables and other sweeping dramas in their original French, or are you the type of person who'd prefer Kafka and the Grimm Brothers and other short tales with strong themes in their original German?

If you're learning the language because you want to keep up with the European perspective on current events, learn German. Deutsche Welle is one of the world's most respected and relied-upon news organizations (right up there with CNN in America and the BBC in the UK).

If you're learning the language because you'd like to use it while traveling, consider where you'd like to travel and what kind of traveling you like to do. In Europe, you'll find German more useful. In Africa, you'll find French more useful. If you'd like the join the Peace Corps or another volunteer service organization, you'll find that French and Spanish are the preferred languages for volunteers. In North America, you'll find French and German equally useful, but one may be more useful than the other depending on your exact location.

German is spoken in many countries from Europe, not just in 2... It is true that if you can speak English you'll be able to learn German easier than french...If you study or work in economy you should choose German, it seems to be the most frequently language use in economy.......

French - it sounds pretty. If you listen to people speaking French, German or Spanish, even when you don't understand it, it sound pretty.

German is harsh and guttural. Personally I hate listening to Spanish (I live in So. California).

I have also heard that behind English, French is the next International language.

French is used more often and in more places, but I hear German is easier to learn if your first language is English. However, if youve taken any romance languages, French might be easy too.
