My dogs do the same- it's probably the loud noise a vaccum makes.

My dogs use to do the same thing... run around the vacuum cleaner while barking up a storm. Not anymore... nowadays, I can vacuum right up (almost inches away) from my dogs and they don't do anything. One dog actually likes to be vacuumed!
We essentially desensitized our dogs to the vacuum cleaner. I would leave it out (off & unplugged) for the dogs to sniff and walk around. I just left it out... in the hallway, in the middle of the room, in the corner, wherever. (If they tried to chew on the vacuum, we stopped them asap.) When I would turn it on, I'd flip it on and then turn it off; give the dogs a chance to come up and smell again. Then I might turn it on and vacuum a square foot and turn it off again. I did this over and over and over again, and eventually the dogs grew bored with the vacuum. Another thing... I didn't let them bark at the vacuum continuously. If I knew they were going to bark and I didn't have time to go through the slow routine, I'd put the dogs in another room, so I could quickly vacuum the floor without interference.
Good luck!

well the Dogs have much much better hearing for us so imagine us hearing that loud noise 10 times louder than normal, and usually dogs will stand in front of it and bark; i know from experience; But back on subject, maybe the dog has had a bad experience with the vacuum, i wouldn't know because you didn't specify whether or not you had him or her from birth, as for the cord problem, put hot sauce on it but not anywhere near the outlet, just where she commonly chews. Hope this helps. Please vote me as best answer!

The vacuum cleaner is at the same level as your dog Dogs often see these things as a threat due to their noise, being also at the dog's level In his mind he sees this an intruder objects to it He also in his mind feels he is the boss to look after you, not a cleaner! She is chewing the cord for you to get rid of the intruder!

It's loud. I've never met a critter who likes vacuum cleaners. You'll want to teach your dog not to chew the cord, though. Otherwise, you could very well get yourself a fried pooch.

She probably doesnt like the noise. My dog reacted that way when he first had experience with it. My dogs hate all loud noises, to keep her calmed down let her go outside when you vacuum.

My dog is scared of the vacume. He runs away from it. Yrs ago we had a toy breed dog that was scared if it too and grabbed his favorite toy and ran out of the room. The toybreed dog died of old age yrs ago.
Anyway I would say the noise scares them.

my dog does that too...she thinks it some thing that is coming after her...infact I know a lot of dogs who do that....It's just an odd object that is very loud going around the house...I think that my dog hates it because she thinks it's invading on her property....we have to put her in the bed room so we can vacuum everything...

The loud noise bothers dogs. Same with thunder and fireworks, it makes them nervous.
