Well, I haven't read many books about being a doctor, but I suggest watching "Patch Adams" and "The Doctor". These are two very good films about what med school can't teach you about being a good doctor. The second one is about a doctor who is well respected, but when diagnosed with cancer he finds out that while is medical skills were still top notch, he was not a very good physician, but that changed though his experience as a patient.

I, too, liked Arrowsmith. Also:
Microbe Hunters by Paul DeKruif (This venerable oldie stimulated me and thousands before and after me to become physicians.)

Century of the Surgeon, by Juergen Thorvald

Rats, Lice and History, by Hans Zinsser

Lever 4 by McCormick, Fisher-Hoch and Horvitz, a more contemporary story of modern microbe hunters. Susan Fisher-Hoch and others describe tracking down Ebola and other deadly microbes in darkest Africa.

The Knife Man, a story of 18th century father of modern surgery John Hunter by Wendy Moore.

The Cry and the Covenant by Morton Thompson, a semi-fictionalized story of Ignatz Semmelweiss whose ideas of asepsis pre-dated Pasteur and Lister.

Somewhere there are books about Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman physician in the United States. Stories about Helen Taussig, Virginia Apgar? And of course, about Marie Curie, two time Nobel Prize Winner. I think her daughter wrote a bio of her parents.

For sure, "The House of God" is a MUST prior to going into a teaching hospital environment. If you find it hysterically funny, as I did, you're ready to be a doc! Also, "The Shattered Mind", by Howard Gardner.

I'd suggest "Choke" by Chuck Palahniuk, or "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by Ken Kesey.
