When I lived in Chicago many years ago, the local CBS news station did a story about people who had near-death experiences. I prefer to call them temporary death experiences, because people are actually dead temporarily when the experiences happen.
Most of the people studied (maybe all, I don't quite remember) had very peaceful, positive experiences, and it didn't depend on what their religious views were.
However, I've heard of people having temporary death experiences that were really horrible.
Here's what I suspect: if we loved and received love while on earth, we'll reflect back on those positive experiences. If we're bitter when we die, we may spend eternity with that bitterness.
This is just my hypothesis from putting pieces of disparate stories together. Certainly I believe that how well we treat people has an effect on us for eternity. So those who think that they can behave any old way on earth and get away with it simply because there (maybe) is no God might be surprised when they move from this world to the next one.

This question is meaningless unless it can be shown that the sense of identity people have actually has some substance. Without demonstrating a clear characterization of a "self" to go anywhere, noone can say where that self might go. It's very much, to my mind, like asking where a flame goes when all the fuel is used; nowhere, it was merely a product of a certain relationship that ceased to be. Seriously, how stupid do you look right now?

Dead is dead is dead. The body decomposes (unless you're cremated). That's it.
Why do you think everyone needs a supernatural explanation for "after" death? Not everyone is terrified to die. Personally - I find comfort in knowing that I'll die and that will be it.

We cease to exist. Hopefully, they will cremate my body and scatter my ashes from a plane over San Diego so I can be spread out across the city.

when we die we die. Nothing happens other than burial/cremation!
Every time you lot ask this you make it sounds like your belief is nothing more than a fear of death you know

This question just shows how easily man-made language can deceive us about man-indifferent reality.
