Some info on chocolate:
Chocolate toxicity
Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic.
When affected by an overdose of chocolate, a dog can become excited and hyperactive. Due to the diuretic effect, it may pass large volumes of urine and it will be unusually thirsty. Vomiting and diarrhoea are also common. The effect of theobromine on the heart is the most dangerous effect. Theobromine will either increase the dog’s heart rate or may cause the heart to beat irregularly. Death is quite possible, especially with exercise.
After their pet has eaten a large quantity of chocolate, many pet owners assume their pet is unaffected. However, the signs of sickness may not be seen for several hours, with death following within twenty-four hours.
Cocoa powder and cooking chocolate are the most toxic forms. A 10-kilogram dog can be seriously affected if it eats a quarter of a 250gm packet of cocoa powder or half of a 250gm block of cooking chocolate. These forms of chocolate contain ten times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Thus, a chocolate mud cake could be a real health risk for a small dog. Even licking a substantial part of the chocolate icing from a cake can make a dog unwell.
Semi-sweet chocolate and dark chocolate are the next most dangerous forms, with milk chocolate being the least dangerous. A dog needs to eat more than a 250gm block of milk chocolate to be affected. Obviously, the smaller the dog, the less it needs to eat.

How long ago? The amount is probably not going to hurt him, it was so tiny. The most toxic types of chocolate are dark chocolate, baking chocolate, and cocoa powder. It can cause seizures and hyperexcitability, as well as vomiting and diarrhea.
To be safe, if it was within the last hour you can make him vomit using 1 table spoon of Hydrogen peroxide, right down the back of the throat. If no vomit in 10 mins repeat. If he shows any signs like a racing heartbeat, can't sit still, very dilated pupils, he should be evaluated by a vet immediately.

Aren't shih tzu's small??? How did he get cake? Do you leave it on the floor or did you drop a piece? The dog will be fine as long as it was only the small amount that he ate. Be careful with chocolate in the future. Good luck.

Your puppy should be fine, at the very least he will spit up a little bit. A piece of chocolate the size of a grain of rice should not affect your dog.

I don't think your dog got enough chocolate to hurt it, but just in case, here is something you can do. Give your dog (since it is very small, a very small amount) 1tsp of canned pureed pumpkin. I know this sounds weird, but when my dog got into some chocolate and I called the vet freaking out, that is what they told me to do. Apparently, something in the pumpkin neutralizes the harmful effects of the chocolate, and also gets their insides moving so they can evacuate it. Like I said, the amount of chocolate probably won't hurt, but if you want to do something, that is what my vet said to do.

If that's the only amount he ate and it's baked chocolate cake, he will be fine. The most dangerous chocolate for dogs is the unsweetened bakers chocolate that tastes gross to humans.

He should be fine, it's the caffeine that makes chocolate so bad for them. Try to get him to eat something absorbant like breads, and get him to drink plenty of water to help flush it out. Otherwise, if it is only a tiny bit like you say, he will be alright. It's amazing the things our dogs can get into though, isn't it??

Yes, he'll be fine. Maybe a tummy ache or loose stool for a day or so. Let him drink water and feed as normal.

chocolate can be deadly for dogs, but the amount he ate shouldn't hurt. i don't know exactly, but from what i understand, he would have to eat like two whole Hershey bars for it to be dangerous.
