We are here to fulfill many different roles.
Biology/Science: To perpetuate our species and to sustain our planet. We're good at the former and terrible at the latter. To collect data so that our Art will be more meaningful.
Art: We have no collective intelligence on our place in the universe, our purpose in life, or our opinions and politics. We use art as a medium to express the condition of not quite knowing. That, and to sell beer and subjugate women.
Philosophy: To never cease thinking about something new...and some things old.
History: To remember where we've been, where we're going, so that we might understand where we are.
Religion: A completely natural way to order and align systems of belief sans actually knowing.
Technology: To make all of the above easier.

To live out our lives. We only have a short time. During this short life we have a choice to make; are we going to serve ourselves or serve others. If one of thos others happens to be God, then we have to believe God by what He says. If we believe God by what He says, then we have done something that has an eternal implication. For apparently we aren't going to stay dead. If we believe God, then we believe that we will not stay dead.
So for those who believe God and believe Him when He says we will not stay dead, then we have returned to the Creator who started this whole thing moving. And we come full circle from being born to being a part of what He wants from us; trust and fellowship.
Our purpose is to live a life that will end with a return to God, who didn't create us so that we will die, but so that we can walk and talk with Him forever.
For those people who do not decide to go God's way, they get to make up their own mind as to why they are here. And they fill their lives with whatever they are capable of gathering.

I can tell you how: a long, complex sequence of successful biological adaptations to our environment. As for why, I guess it's to continue adapting and surviving, to become the most adaptive beings possible. We've just started thinking on the meta-adaptive level, considering what is needed to keep our environment survivable.
Not a good enough reason? Then we'll have to think of one, won't we?

"To be excellent to each other"
Actually, I would like to plead The Rule of Wicca. Which is basically the above (Even if that one's a poor rip of Bill & Ted).
