The avocado is widely considered a vegetable, since it is commonly used in salads. However, it is actually a fruit that tastes like a vegetable, and most markets display it with other typical fruits. The understanding I have is that a 'fruit' is the fruit of a plant, containing seed, whereas a veggie is a plant that you eat part of. You eat apples which are the fruit of the apple tree, but not the twigs, bark or root. Tomatoes are the fruit of the tomato bush or vine and contain seeds, but the plants leaves, stems and root are not edible--likewise it is a fruit (so are peppers, beans, peas, corn etc). You eat the root of the carrot, potato, sunchoke, radish, onions; the young stem of asparagus and the stem of the rhubarb; the leaves of cabbages and greens etc; the unopened flower buds of broccoli. These are vegetables. Fun facts: Archaeologists in Peru have found domesticated avocado seeds buried with Incan mummies dating back to 750 B.C. and there is evidence that avocados were cultivated in Mexico as early as 500 B.C. The avocado originated somewhere in the tropics of either Central or South America. The exact location is in dispute. Archeological evidence suggests it has been cultivated for 7,000-8,000 years. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word for testicle, supposedly because of the avocado’s shape.

Technically because it has a seed in it, it is a fruit. Just like tomatoes.
Vegetables do not have seeds in them.
