Click Start > Run and type "msconfig" at the prompt. Click the Startup tab and look at all that junk that loads when you launch your PC. Do you really need "Adobe Reader Speed Launch"? Probably not. Turn off anything else that looks useless, but be careful not to disable your anti-virus and important system components.

Carefully (underline carefully) review your startup menu:
Start
Settings
Taskbar and Start Menu
click the Start Menu tab
click Customize

click a program to remove from startup, click remove

If you do not recognize a program, leave it alone. It could be a system file.

Agree on Samuel Adams.

Start>run>type in "msconfig>startup tab>disable unwanted items in there.
But don't worry about the antivirus, even if you disable them all, your antivirus will still run because it is not included in the list under the startup tab, instead, it is under the "services" tab(just beside startup).
