I live in NYC and wanted to go for a day hike somewhere nearby that was accessible by train (metro-north, LIRR, etc). Any suggestions?

Hi Im from Rockland county NY. You can hop the train in Hoboken and take it all the way to Suffern NY. (Its about 30 min from that train station) and you can go hiking in Hariman State Park about 15 min car drive from the train station. A cab can take you there for very little money. If you do decide to do this, tell the cab driver to take you to 7 lakes drive in Sloatsburg and ask them to pick you up at a spacific time. Good luck.

You can also take the Metro North Harlem line to the Applachian Trail but only on Weekends and Holidays. For the Palisades Trail you can also take the A Train to 175th and walk across the GW Bridge which is a pretty cool thing to do anyway. The Trail starts at the Jersey End of the Bridge.

Yes.

Take Metro-North railroad 70-80 mins. from Grand Central to Cold Spring on the Hudson. It is $10 off peak each way. The train lets you off in the heart of a quaint little town on the river with lots of places to get a sandwich for your hike or an apres hike ice cream or sit down meal. If you like antiques, you will also want to spend a little time in town. Then it is a 5 min. walk to the enterence to some nice hiking trails. Just ask anyone where the enterence is, it is easy to find.

The trails are easy to walk. They have some nice old ruins to discover and a lake at the top of one of the short peaks. You can also find some nice scenic river outlooks. Have fun!

Go take a hike in Jersey. You can either take a bus/ jitney from 176st bus station across the bridge or take the 158 from platform 200 to the GW bridge. The hikes along the palisades are pretty challenging (watch out for the poison ivy) take your own snacks and drinks. You can find more info and maps at http://www.nynjtc.org

Go the federal land in Carnarise. That's where they have the horse stables. It's right off the Belt Parkway next to exit 13. if you want to do some serious hiking try Camp Hero in Montauk.
