U have to have the Pizza! Right off the mile, there is Gino's East (very good) or near rush street is Giordanos (the best). Go hungry! The Pizza is big and will fill you up (see the web site below).
The mile offers so much in the way of good food, but Pizza is the best way to go in Chicago.
If you want a really good place for Breakfast, its Lou Mitcheals.......oh boy the best morning food in the world

Okay, try the Chicago style pizza - then motor down to the Calumet Region, and try the best pizza anywhere: Romano's Drive-In in Highland, Indiana. Thin crust, sliced into squares, unbelievable blend of cheeses! Most of the pizza places in the Calumet Region also serve Italian beef sandwiches, which if he has never tried, are worth the trip as well. If you can find a Pizza King, a chain that has an incredible stromboli sandwich, totally unlike the ones you get in Italian restaurants: finely ground sausage, cooked until brown, on a huge two-sided order of garlic bread, with marinara sauce, onions, and mozzarella, get one of those, too.

I would recommend you taking him to Freddy's Pizza. Not only does it have great food but it has old world appeal. Freddy's is a dying breed. It is a neighborhood restaurant/Italian Grocery store. It is ran by a husband and wife team. All the food is home made and made fresh. They use only the best ingredients and it comes out in the food. I have been going there all my life and I have never had a bad meal. It is an experience that I am sure your boyfriend would enjoy. I have also included an article from the Oak Park Newspaper regarding Freddy's.

I have to say if you dont want to eat a whole pie then go to The Art of Pizza on ashland for Chicago style. A slice at Art runs 2.75. There is also a Baci Pizza in the loop that has huge slices of New York style pies and a free drink for 5 bones.

The other answers are 'ok' (and I do like Gino's) but why don't you try the very good and slightly unusual (i.e., upside down, like a pot pie or a mushroom) pizza at the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company at 2121 N. Clark St.
tel: 773-248-2570
I doubt that you would be anything less than happy there.
