i always thought luv was more for a friend and love was for someone closer like family or a partner. Is it really? Or does it even really matter?

There's no difference. It means the same thing. This is English not Spanish where they have fine differences of meaning between querer and amar.

The difference is the spelling luv is not a word it is a short cut to the actual word Love. Love is the proper spelling.

it probably doesnt matter becuz its just usually used 4 iming or emailing...but if u really are close to sumone, love may seem more sincere than lu, which seems a little more playful and friendly. hope this helped!
