I generally ask questions in the Family/Relationships category, however, yesterday I came across this area and found it immediately intriguing.
There is something that I wonder about....
When answering a question that is about God/Jesus/the Bible, why do so many who claim to be believers answer glibly, sometimes carelessly, and often in a format that implies the answer is nothing more than their own opinion?
If you are answering a question regarding these issues should you not answer with something specific and concrete which supports your answer....namely, the word of God?
For example, I just answered a question in which someone asked why premarital sex is a sin. Many answered, most of whom obviously read and/or believe the Bible, but they all answered without Biblical reference. My answer was, simply "Because God says so," and then I backed it up with verses.
Any thoughts?

Dear RackhamRachel, Thank you, dear, for the chuckle. I have to tell you that, due to my life as a child and young adult I once called myself an 'atheist'. But I have seen truth and thank God I am free. Bless you.

I agree with you but must admit sometimes I have answered the truth as the Bbile teaches without giving the scripture.
Admitted this is a lazy habit many questioners want personal opinion without scripture but I would agree with you that it is indeed better to show chapter and verse definitely where there could be a disagreement.

Because The Bible is only the Word of God if you read it right. Many of the right things in the Bible are also right in the ways people understand things to be right, but a lot of the things in the Bible (about love-relationships, mostly) are not right in the way that most of the right things are.

For example, "The Kingdom of God is coming!" Some people think that 'rightly' means we have to sit and wait for it. Some think it 'rightly' means we have to go far away to get to it.

I don't think.

I agree with you. However, being new here, you don't yet fully understand the "group dynamic." There are numerous unbelievers who are here with the sole purpose to mock Christians. That's fine, because Jesus promised this would happen. We're supposed to be patient with unbelievers who mock us. But after awhile, some answerers here get tired of the mocking and answer without thinking.

Then there's another category of Christian answerer: he or she knows what the Bible says because of sermons, Sunday School, etc., but can't quite find the Scriptural passages to back up an answer. This is a lazy Christian if you ask me. My Scriptural support for this is 1 Peter 3:15. ; )

Wow, don't you find that many of these questions are simply asking for others thoughts on subjects? Also, have you considered the many who do not share your faith? I do not intend to cause you offense in any way; however, the words you quote from the bible can be interpreted in different ways. There are many who believe that the bible are stories meant to guide, not be believed literally and without question. I have answered many questions regarding many religious questions and I have never claimed to be all knowing or absolutely, without a doubt right...just intend to open others to possibilities and acceptance of adversity. I see this as a forum for discussion..not to preach from the bible. There have been many times when I have asked the consideration that Christianity was not the first form of religious celebration and why would you say it is the only right one. I can back up this statement with evidence..piles; however, I am not trying to prove anything, just OPEN MINDS. DO YOU REALLY WANT PROOF, WOULD YOU ACCEPT IT OR JUST TURN BACK TO ANOTHER'S' MORE COMFORTABLE INTERPRETATION OF FACTS?

There are a few reasons why people blindly answer questions, and never give biblical references for those answers.

1) They know only what they hear in Church, and don't recall the verses off the top of thier heads.
a) They could be a bit lazy and not want to look them up, or
b) They may not know where they are, and would be frustrated trying to look them up.,

If this is the case, they don't want to look foolish when they answer, and don't realize that by not backing up their points with scripture, that they do look a bit foolish.
I would guess that some of them are new enough to their religion that they don't know where to find answers.

2) They just want the two points that you get when you answer.

A good researched answer would include a reference to where they learned their information. It would also help to show where you found your answer in case the person was wanting to look further into their question.
However more specifically, it is good reason to have your own individual opinion. But that's just the difference of doing your research and stating your opinion. Granted my opinion is based on research. I just am lazy to not write my references. :-) Laziness doesn't help anyone but giving common sense advice still can be just as good. Also not everyone went through college to receive a degree eitner. There are many forms of truth other than the bible. Is there a reference book of common knowledge/advice ??

Isn't it amazing? Nothing is more certain than the TRUTH of the proud.

Answer:pride . .. this is why the devil will never repent, why they are scattered into multipule denominations thousands upon thousands of denominations now . .. this is why they cannot see they are blinded by pride, confused in their innermost thoughts.

Psalms 18:28  For thou wilt save the humble people; but wilt bring down the eyes of the proud.
Luke 1:51  He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
Psalms 18:28  For thou wilt save the humble people; but wilt bring down the eyes of the proud.
Job 40:7  Look on all that are proud, and confound them, and crush the wicked in their place.

Pride may be the worst of sins. In pride people do not repent, but insist they are right. Refusing humility, and insisting they are THE TRUTH.

GOD will exault those who humble themselves, and will humble those who exault themselves.

LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

Yes I agree, but find i am guilty of this myself< I am not ashamed of the gospel BUt when we use more quotes they react to that also and say its only just verses and they want to know. happens on here a lot. They want interpretations it seems. It doesnt matter what they think or me, it is ONLY what God says, but I also found that even more will listen to me if I say what I know God says and then encourage them to go look it up on their own, it helps them to remember. I see both sides of this issue. So I guess finding the balnce is the key, as Jesus did. HE spole to the ppl and said what God said, and we are to do that too. But, nothing I say cant be baqcked up by scripture, and I encourage them to go and see for themselves. When one reads the word, it comes alive and will make more sense to them. But again, I do know hwat you mean, thats my automatic way to preach and teach, but I have seen on here as well as in person at times, we have to reach them where they are, catch their interest and then give scirpture. what do all you other christians think that read this? Curious.

Hon,
Christians are not immediately made totally knowledgeable, holy, perfect and righteous..

We are all on different stages of our spiritual journey. Lots of us are just babies in Christ and taking baby steps and falling down and then our Dad, (GOD) picks us up. Wipes us off. Kisses our boo-boos and we toddle off to try again. We are NOT perfect. We will NEVER be perfect. We are all struggling with the same questions, problems and temptations that everyone else is.

We screw up, yes, even pastors, priests, ministers and such. We are carnal by nature. Be patient God isn`t thru with us yet.

God bless from Texas <><

Hello R&S xian nube. Please do not encourage more bible verses as answers. If you want to say "god says so in the bible" that is enough, unless someone wants the specifics on where and what the words were that you're referring to. You obviously feel very strongly about your faith, good for you. But this area delves into many faiths, includeing the non-religion atheism. If you stick around here long enough, you'll probably get offended or end up questioning your faith and everything it's based on. Proceed with caution or go back where you came from. (Just a friendly warning from a friendly atheist) Peace!
