religoun is mainly a set of rules to be followed, people today look down on the police and have no fear of the law, but fear of death and burning in hell is much greater then a few months in jail and a fine.

do you think that religoun could be another attempt to keep the human race from destroying itself?

Guilt does keep the pews filled.

It's really not to keep people in line, though. If it were, the rules would have been reasonable and could be followed. But they're not. They are an impossible list of rules that even says what you're allowed to think and not think.

So, it really is meant to be a means to failure. Religion thrives on emotional manipulation, and the more you can make people feel guilty throughout the day, the more they will think about church, go to church, and give money each week.

Religion is a way of life ... not just something you resort to when you are sad or heart broken or devastated by any means .. It gives you morality without which Human race is as bad as animals living on this planet ... it gives you peace of mind during this chaotic lifestyle we all choose for our selves
... It tells you right and wrong ... and laws which are in favor of all ... and Just ... People might disagree to my answer But Religion is what guides you toward the end ... live morally and successfully

Although I do not believe that religion was created to keep people from destroying themselves, I believe that most religions are all about rules. I have found that many are uncomfortable without boundaries and boundaries gives many excuses, reasons, or validation for certain behaviors. I mean no disrespect to any with these words I say, only encouraging those searching for knowledge.

Fundies have always regarded (any) religion as a list of rules, but real spirituality (in any religion) is much more than that.

Love, compassion, mercy, social justice, forgiveness are far more important than following lists of rules.

In a secular context, google the work of Lawrence Kohlberg, which explains the difference between following rules and acting according to principle.

Yes, I think it's meant to keep the masses in control while also keeping them unaware of what's really going on by those in power.

The truth is that while the masses believe in one religion, the leaders may make u believe that they practice it too, but all the while they have another agenda.

The movie The Matrix is a good example of this happening.

I think originally religion was a tool that the more intelligent members of society used to control the less intelligent, and to bring themselves power and wealth (not to keep the human race from destroying itself . . . I think Freud said something similar). And so it remains with institutions like the Roman Catholic Church . . .

No, the laws were created because God saw that his people were not following and walking away from what was being taught. But even the laws were up for interpretation and we still have a problem with people ignoring them whether they are Gods or civil laws

Yes, and no.

Religion's rules were designed for an ancient time by people willing to cater to the superstitious. Ironically, it is that very faith-based thinking that religion promotes that will likely result in the final nuclear holocaust.

I think it's more an attempt to keep the masses in check while doing what you want in a seat of power. I think the human race is fully capable of keeping itself alive without religion.
