Stephen is remembered in Christianity as the first martyr (derived from the Greek word "martyros" which means "witness", see also Martyrology). Stephen's execution was the precursor to widespread persecution of Christians (Acts 8:1-3), resulting in the imprisonment of many of the new religion's adherents, and the scattering of many of them to throughout the Jewish Diaspora. Acts 8:1 claims that "... a severe persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the countryside of Judea and Samaria." -NRSV According to the book of Acts, a young and zealous disciple of the Pharisees named Saul (also called Paul according to Acts 13:9), joined the persecutors, and played an ever increasing roll in this, the first persecution of the Church.[7]
Encouraged by his successes in Jerusalem, Paul attempted to carry the persecution into Damascus, to which many Christians had fled, but instead was converted to Christianity after reportedly being struck blind by a bright light and hearing the voice of Jesus on the Road to Damascus (Acts 9:1-31, 22:1-22, 26:9-24).

In Acts chapters 7-9 Paul is seen as being given power by the Jewish Authorities to persecute and kill the followers of Jesus, and he participated in the stoning to death of Stephen. In chapter 9 however he has an encounter with the risen Lord on the road to Damascus and his life is forever changed, he is struck blind for 3 days then after a Disciple is sent to pray for him he again receives his sight. And from that point on he opens peoples spiritual eyes to see the truth of who Jesus is.

Hopefully this passage of Scripture will help:
Acts 9:1-2
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord's disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem.
Paul's name was originally Saul

These are Paul's words about that: "I too was convinced that I ought to do all that was possible to oppose the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And that is just what I did in Jerusalem. On the authority of the chief priests I put many of the saints in prison, and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. Many a time I went from one synagogue to another to have them punished, and I tried to force them to blaspheme. In my obsession against them, I even went to foreign cities to persecute them." (Acts 26:9-11)

He was a Pharisee, and it says that he was present at the stoning of Stephen (the first Christian martyr). He was on his way to persecute other Christians (probably putting them to death) when God met him and radically changed him.

Well, sorry to get technical but Paul did nothing. It was Saul! =] he changed his name...
Read your Bible to find out all the horrible things Saul did before he was blinded.

He was known to hunt them down, drag them into courts, and was even present at stonings of Christians. That's just sourced from the Bible, if you read Josephus, you'll see more on him there.
