I'm looking for a nice, clean, safe, fun beach for my family and friends to enjoy this weekend. The closest thing we have in NYC that EVERYONE goes to is Brighton and Orchard, I'm sorry to sound bitter, but those two are NOT an option.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

You are right. Those are NOT options...

I go to Long Beach. It is not in the city but very easy to get to, clean and nice sand. LIRR lets you off just a couple blocks from the beach after a 45 min ride on the express from Penn Station. Staten Island is the only other beach that you can consider if, like me, you prefer to have "Manhattan" types around you and prefer not to worry about hypadermic needles or loud music blaring away. Either of these should work for you. Have fun...

Long Beach
A popular summer destination for many, the free parking and great deals in the area are quite a draw. A small, but good boardwalk (at times will have art fairs) and a great atmosphere make Long Beach the summer beach destination of choice. Atlantic Ocean; Hours: Daily 9am - 6pm; Beach Pass: $6; FYI: The LIRR has a package deal with a round-trip train ticket and beach pass for $12.

South & Midland Beaches
Located near each other, both South & Midland beaches provide great views of lower New York. Enjoy free concerts and fireworks at South Beach, meander along the 4th largest boardwalk in the world (at 7500 feet long), and sun-bathe in peace at Midland. Atlantic Ocean, Staten Island; 718-987-0709; Hours: Daily 10am - 6pm; Directions via bus: Bx51, Bx4, Bx5, Bx6, Bx7, Bx8 to FDR Boardwalk

I was reading the Sunday Daily News ( that or the Sunday Newsday paper) and they had an article on the beaches in the city. Pretty much, all the beaches in New York City are unsatisfactory. I live near Far Rock, and I have never thought about going to there. All these beaches in the city are dirty, polluted, and unsafe. Luckily I have relatives who live on the coast of New Jersey.

If you're looking for a nice, clean, safe, and fun beach for family and friends, I highly recommend you go to New Jersey. Now I know what you're thinking? NEW JERSEY? Yes, the beaches are great there! I've gone there every summer since I was 5, and i'm almost 25.

All you need to do is drive to Keansburg,Seabright, or Long Branch and you could use one of the public beaches. Also there is Sandy Hook, which I highly recommend, but you have to pay for parking. If you don't want to drive, go to the Port Authority and buy a roundtrip ticket to any of those towns, get off the bus and go to the beach.I think a roundtrip is $20 now. The bus line that will take you there is Academy Bus Line. Also, all these towns/ beaches are on Route 36. And no matter which beach you go to, remember you are not allowed to have an open fire (no BBQ) and no alcoholic beverages, so bring a cooler with sandwiches and sodas.

OR... you could go to one of those beaches that "are NOTan option?"

Have fun and don't forget the sunblock!

Jones Beach or Robert Moses on Long Island. Jones Beach you could get to by the LIRR. Get off at the Wantagh stop. Stand in front of Brand's Bicycle Store for the bus that goes to Jones Beach. Robert Moses you need drive there by taking the Southern State Parkway. As far as Long Beach, it's basically for those who live in Long Beach. They check for proof at the gates to the beach.
