I don't think it is that smokers are jerks, I think it is that a lot of PEOPLE are jerks, and some just happen to be smokers.
I try REALLY hard not to be one of those smokers.
I ALWAYS ask if it is OK if I smoke around non-smokers, and then, only outside, or with people I am fairly sure will not mind.
If I have my non-smoker friends over to my house, I will usually stand outside with the door open if I want a cigarette, and blow the smoke outside, so I can still carry on the conversation. I don't smoke in my car with non-smoking passengers, unless they say they don't care, in which case I ALWAYS roll the window all the way down. I never throw my butts on the ground, and I always make sure I don't ash on anything flammable.
I guess some people just don't care about being rude.
Just a caveat-
If you are in a bar, cigar shop, or club, and people are smoking there because it is ALLOWED, I think it is rude to complain. If you go to a bar, and people are smoking, don't be surprised - hey, it's a bar. There are non-smoking bars/clubs that you could go to instead.

I think your question is quite foolish and some of the responses are quite ignorant. Yes, everyone does something that bothers someone else. I'm sure your AXE spray bothers other people around you, not just people that are smoking! Have you considered that or are you just concerned about yourself? Have you ever thought about someone's alergies or sinus problems that you've just increased by doing that? My point is that people can be rude no matter what they do. Do you get that? You have the person smoking, the person wearing too much body spray, the person who has bad body odor, the person driving while doing something else such as talking on a cell or eating, and people making ignorant comments! Someone is always going to be offended my something. I know plently of smokers that smoke in one place and one place only even if it means they go all day without one. You just classify all smokers as inconsiderate but you're just as inconsiderate. To the person talking about someone falling asleep with a cigarette..... living in an apartment you're at a risk for a lot of things such as someone leaving the stove on or a curling iron on.

I think most smokers know it's offensive to smoke in the street buy where else are they going to smoke? It's really hard and awkward to be a smoker, I know cause I'm one. You always want to hold the cigarette as far away as you can and go downwind, but then the wind changes... You always try to blow the smoke in the other direction of your friends. Those smokers are addicted, they have probably tried to quit several times, I have. The smell of smoke travels really far, it's almost impossible to go somewhere where you won't be bothering anyone with your cigarette. I am sorry about the nuisance, hopefully somebody will invent a cigarette that either isn't addictive, or does not create any second hand smoke.

because we have the right to, it's NOT against the law. I'm sure you have been to a bar in your life time, and have NEVER complained about someone smoking. I do however always ask for smoking sections, and always ask if it's ok if I light up. I do have respect for NON smokers, some how tho, I don't feel the NON smokers have respect for the smokers. I have 3 children, I do not smoke in my house or car. I am well aware of the health risks to them.As an adult, I have the right to smoke. And I exercise that right everyday, latelty tho I have been considering getting some help to quit, (EASIER SAID THAN DONE) the worst people who constantly griping about smokers are those who have smoked and quit. Smoking is socially acceptable still, just like drinking, I don't drink, or do any kind of illegal drugs. so i think it all evens out.

I'm a smoker. If I'm around a group of unfamiliar people, I don't light up...well, I'll walk away about 20' feet or so, down wind. Maybe you should fart in close proximity to the inconciderate smokers. Why do some some smoker's light up any where they want? They think they have a personal self righteous right. They don't like being told what to do...etc. (****ing jerks, totally)

It sounds as if someone inparticular has bothered you. As a smoker, some of what you say can be disturbing. However, I too go to a secluded location to smoke, and while in my car, if there are non-smokers riding with me, I do not smoke. I voted for the non-smoking law in my state. We can no longer smoke in any public buildings. We have to stay 25' from the doors of any businesses. I think that is appropriate. It's offensive, and deadly over time. So I would suggest, you contact your local congress and work on getting a law passed. It took years for it to come to fruition in my state, but it eventually did.

I always go out of my way to smoke as far away from people as I reasonably can. I don't understand why some smokers just light up any- and everywhere they can. Maybe because they have just as much right to smoke outside as you do to breathe clean air? My advice--move away from them if they light up near you. Sure you shouldn't have to, but then again, if a smoker is standing outside in a designated smoking area (or at least in the near vicinity of an ashtray) they shouldn't have to move either.

Here in the US, many areas and businesses are smoke-free - by law.
Rather than whining about this - do something about it.
Of course, you should first leave the designated smoking area at once.
Tell the offender that s/he is smoking in a non-smoking area and to please put out their cigarette immediately. No, they cannot finish their cigarette.
Tell the maitre-d or other person in charge to insist that the offender either immediately put out the cigarette or ask them to leave. No, they may not finish their cigarette.
Report the offending business to the authorities - many restaurants/bars are now smoke free by law.
Insist on being seated as far away from the Smoking section in restaurants. You may have to wait a while - but you'll not be offended nearly as much.
