The police in the US are for the most part as professional as their intelligence allows them to be. Most are decent, some corrupt and some completely retarded.
I'm comfortable with mine simply because they lack a lot of power to go after you before they think you have committed a crime. You go to Europe, and with the exception of the Netherlands, the police are very harsh compared to the US. They have different rules of engagement and have different rules for when they can pick you up for something. They definitely have different rules about the use of deadly (and non-deadly) force. I personally watched the Polezei in what was then West Germany riddle a car that had a suspected prison escapee in it full of holes. And I mean FULL. Ever see or read about Bonnie and Clyde? It was like that.
Sometimes police have "political" duties as well, and those are the ones I'd be afraid of. Professional police forces like Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, Western Europe and a lot of the more Western styled countries in Eastern Europe and Asia aren't going to take to the streets and beat the hell out of you because you turned up to a protest rally against the current head of state.
India is a democracy and I do not know anything about your police, but if you are afraid of them and they haven't killed you or anyone you might know or love, then they are probably doing their job: deterring crime.

Where I live now is a small community and the cops are like family. When I first moved here I wasn't familiar with all the streets and was pulled over for speeding. Instead of a ticket I got a warning even though I 14 mph over the limit! The biggest city I ever lived in was Fort Smith in the state of Arkansas and the police there were cool for the most part. That city borders Moffett and Roland Oklahoma, and ALL of those cops are crooks and A$$holes! I heard the FBI shut them down due to corruption, but just in case I advise everyone to avoid Moffett and Roland at all cost!

Police take money from the government to enforce the government's will, whether it is right or wrong. By definition, that makes them bad people.
Most of the people answering here have probably had little experience with law enforcement. I've been in politics for years and have dealt with many of them. They are, without exception, stupid. They think they're doing good, but they never do. They break the laws they're supposed to enforce, they kill innocent people, they steal anything they want (look up civil asset forfeiture), and they abuse their power if they don't like th people they're dealing with. The US has the highest per capita prison population in the world.

I like the cops. For the most part they are good people doing their best. Every now and then we have a bad one. It also depends on what movies. I would recommend Robcop and Police Academy

Most are.
Just like any other group of people, there are the rotten apples, if you will. There are bad cops that do horrible things. But in my experience, if they are treated with respect and courtesy, then they will treat you that way in return.
Also, if you commit a serious crime, then you may not be such a huge fan of the police, since they tend to be tougher on criminals.

Not really, movies are not real life. police profile or stop people because of their race or how they are dressed. Some police are good but the bad ones make all cops look bad.

That depends on who you ask. Police are generally well-behaved toward white Americans. But when interacting with black and Hispanic Americans, their attitude changes. "Protect and Serve" becomes "bully and brutalize". As a black person, I would be VERY hesitant to call police to help me with a problem.

Both good and bad police imo. I think there are far more good cops than bad.

Police, in general are pretty much public servants in the US. There is some authority overuse and some people fear them a bit. Those that really fear them are generally criminals or are associated with criminals.
