I'm remodling my Living room. I have decided to use 1x4's as my door trim to make it look rustic. Looking for some suggestions on what type of stain I should use. Thank You!

It depends upon what color or effect you want to achieve. Yuo can go to most places that sell wood stains and they have a chart that shows the different colors and hues of most wood stains.
A rustic look is probably best obtained by rough-cutting the wood before you put it in place. A dark stain such as walnut, or mahogany would further the effect. A light-colored wood like ash or oak will take away from the effect. In fact, you may want to use a gel stain since it will go on darker and you might get by with only one coat. It's almost like painting instead of staining the wood. With stain, you'll probably have to use 3 or 4 coats to get it darke enough. Especially if you're using a light wood such as pine or fir or something similar, which is usually sold at places like Lowes, in sizes such as 1 X 4s....

good luck

I like Minwax stains. Go to a Home Center and look at the colors and finishes you can select. Rustic usually is not gloss finished but if gloss is what you want, look at the Minwax Polyshades stains. They contain the finish coat which saves a step.

You should go to Home Depot and Lowes and compare prices with the colors you want. Stains are pretty basic with regards to ingredients. Your concern should be the lacquer you use to shine them up. Unless of course you are going for the old weathered look.
