It depends. Many characters have the likeness copyrighted as well.

If the drawing you use is recognizable as a specific character, using it in any form without permission would violate the copyright.

i would think that you would still have to alter the character in some way to avoid violating trademark. if it is a known character, folks will recognize it with or without textual identification, and you could still get burned for it.
