If the local church is doing their job, they should know the people in your area needing help.

Selfish--well, a lot less selfish than those who are gratified to see the needs of others because it makes them feel justified in what they have; a lot less selfish than those who never think of anyone having less than they.
Some people are more interpersonally driven and have a personal touch to offer along with their material contributions. Some get their gratification from seeing the recipient's gratitude. (That's not exactly pure, but you don't have to be perfect to be good.)
You could check with whatever agency deals with foster kids. Few states pay enough in support and the kids need supplies, etc. too.
I think the other responder is right about checking on base. I still remember the soldiers' families on Food Stamps stories. If everyone there is okay, you could also contact any local Methodist churches and ask if the UMW has local projects. We sometimes work with local groups that don't get much support elsewhere.

If there are Homeless shelters there in your area, then
you might make a donation, in small packages to the
individuals there.
Some DHS offices will allow you to put 4 or 5 items in
bags, and leave them on the table in the waiting rooms
of their lobbys, and you might start a ''going home'' care
package, for the elderly, or those who are being discharged
from a hospital stay. They are always in appreciation of
kindness.
Make Care Packages for children of daycare centers...
the leaders there always know who is the needy children.
You can always donate to the Foster Children too.
There is Grant Monies for Outreach Services too, and you
could start a neighborhood organization and deliver goods
to the elderly/disabled, and persons on ''fixed incomes",
as several of those people, can use a few items from time
to time.
There is always an office at the ''Projects'' for the elderly
and disabled, and you can divide the goods into bags,
and put a sign, ''limted to one bag per household'' on it,
and leave them at that office.
Police Dept's can usually recommend families who need
help.
Watch the newspapers for situations where there is a
housefire & such as that, and donate to that family.
You might make packages, and leave them at the fire dept.
and they can distribute them to ''victims'', and you are
allowed to put your return address/ point of contact, such
as email address or p.o. box.
Any Chamber of Commerce might be able to help
provide that information too.
You might fix packages for children, who are disabled, and
the schools can help you distribute to those people.
Those children always appreciate a kindness.
Hope this helps, from me...Too Funny

Try volunteering at a local food pantry. You can meet the folks that need the help while distributing or serving. Online, I think you can query organizations like the Salvation Army, or if you are a member of a church, they often try to track folks that could use a hand, ask your church, or any service organization in your area.

You can also check out the social service office on base. You might be surprised at how close the needy are.
