If let's say you or they looked you up over the internet and was assumed to arrive at the airport at a certain date, and then not go on that exact day and then someone else recognized you and the friend and then been hounding you for this last 5 years over it, They stopped writing and I really did not know them they know me, am I at fault?

And also they started talking about after a year later, word got back to me or the story, how the friend was stood up at the airport with tears rolling down his face.

if you are saying that you told someone you will be there for them and wasn't, then yes it was your fault. even if you didn't know them, you should not have agreed to something if you wasn't going to follow through. you should apologize.
