Exercise is never a waste of time. However, if you want to see results that matter you need to put in the time. Losing weight consists of three things:
Cardio: 30-40 minutes 3 to 4 times a week. If your out of shape you can start by walking and build up your endurance.
weight training: You can use the dumbells you already have to do lunges, squats, arm curls, tricep kickbacks and flys for the chest.
Diet: 5 small health meals a day is ideal to speed up your metabolism and not feel hungary all the time.
Good Luck.

Lifting usually builds muscle. If you're trying to trim down, and slim down, you should do cardio. Things like power walking, treadmills, aerobics, even swimming and bike riding is good. When you get to the weight you want and you want to define youself, then do a little weights. Sit ups will help you trim your mid section and define it eventually. It takes a lot of hard work if you want a nice middle, but it pays off. It may be a little hard to get back into the routine at first, but you really gotta keep it on a schedule at least 3x a week. You may be tired and sore at first, but that's the way it is. It all pays off in the end. You need to eat well too. Drink lots of water and stay away from sweets and cut your carbs. I lost a lot of weight doing things like this. Good Luck!

If you do these exercises regularly for a long time, then they will help you loose fat. Exercise increases your metabolic rate and burns calories. And some of those extra calories come from the fat in your body.
Whether you loose weight or not depends on whether you are overweight or not.
If your weight is normal, then exersise will help you to become more fit and healthy. But it will not make you loose weight.
If you are overweight, then exercise will help you loose your extra weight, provided that you avoid drinking soft drinks and eating high calorie foods.
Avoiding soft drinks is important because according to latest research, even consumption of low-calory diet drinks increases the risk of obesity.
Here is what one study found:
"In those who drink one or more soft drinks daily, there was an association of an increased risk of developing the metabolic syndrome." ...
"We were struck by the fact that it didn't matter whether it was a diet or regular soda that participants consumed, the association with increased risk was present," senior author Dr. Ramachandran Vasan, of the Framingham Heart Study and Boston University School of Medicine, said in a statement.

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.
Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.
U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry. No experience of dumbells.

Well, if you do sit ups for 1 hour then you might loose a few pounds. But lifting weights will just give you arm strength and muscles. Hope I helped and good luck!

it will help but not a lot
basically what you are doing is building muscle and muscle burns calories so that is good but the more affective way to lose weight is to add cardio to what your doing it will burn a ton of calories and that is the secret to losing weight
remember to keep your metabolism running by having healthly snakes and small means 6-8 times a day.
good luck

It will help you tone up. but it will not help you lsoe weight. Muscles weigh more than fat, so any time you bulk up you might actually gain weight, but lose some inches.
