Religious people have faith and believe that god exists, and in their respective litterature.

Atheists belive and have faith that there is no god and the bible is BS.

What's the difference if you really think about it? They're just opposite results but the exact same way of thinking. So, why do you argue? The answer is facts, you argue about facts and the lack of facts. It's a catch 22, no one can win or even end a conversation so why bother?

the lack of religion is not a religion per se i realize, but it requires faith and belief just the same like religions do. Neither are based on fact. You cannot prove or disprove the existance of god, or a god. That is a fact.

People considered it common sense that the world was flat. Were they right?

Atheism is a 'LACK' of belief? That's completely incorrect. If that's true then you're agnostic, you LACK belief that god exists and you LACK belief that he doesn't exist. This lack of belief generates a neutrality. Who are you to say that someone is wrong in their religion? You don't 'know' that you're right, just like they dont 'know' that they're right either. You hypothesize, you believe, you yes... have faith in the lack of divinity, but you don't KNOW. which is really they key word here.

Wrong. They aren't even close to the same way of thinking.

There would be no argument if Christians didn't proselytize and try to force their beliefs onto everyone else via the laws.

Atheist= LACK of belief. It's not a choice, people. I can't believe in deities any more than you can believe in dragons and gargoyles.

As for why we argue, that's obvious. We don't want to silently have our rights usurped, or have our education system eroded or have other people's opinions enforced on our lives.

Yes, only 5% or so of the population is fundamentalist, but they're pretty influential. Look at the amount of legislation they produce.

Edit: Please get your definitions right. Yes, atheism is a lack of belief in a deity. I lack belief in Hera, Ra and Thor and God equally. Wiki: Atheism, as a philosophical view, is the position that either affirms the nonexistence of gods[1] or rejects theism.[2] When defined more broadly, atheism is the absence of belief in deities,[3] alternatively called nontheism.[4]

Agnosticism is not lack of belief, it is afirmation that one does not know. Wiki: Agnosticism is the philosophical view that the truth value of certain claims—particularly metaphysical claims regarding theology, afterlife or the existence of God, god(s), deities, or even ultimate reality—is unknown or, depending on the form of agnosticism, inherently unknowable due to the nature of subjective experience.

Not all atheists rely on faith.

-----

Actually, the non-existence of any theistic deity is provable.

Contrary to common claims, non-existence is a provable property, via contradiction, given that the properties are well defined.

I assert that there are no two numbers (a, b) such that a/b = sqrt(2).

Such a statement is a statement of non-existence. It's also provable.

I will yield this leaves deism possible. It's a bit more difficult to nail down a deity that may not give a rats butt about the universe and doesn't bother revealing itself. But considering that, occam's razor seems principle enough.

----------

I KNOW there is no theistic deity. It's really that simple.

Actually no. As I said before, You can have FAITH in your cross references, first experiences of what you have read or of what you have personally witnessed. Unrelated confirmation is always a plus. So my "faith" in the absence of a god doesn´t stem from revelations, propaganda or hasty conclusions about the unexplained. I prefer to use the word trust... So I trust that it is statistically highly unlikely that a divine being could exist. I trust that it is statistically unlikely that we are the product of some conscious will.... Because otherwise the job was one hell of a FU. Let´s say that we suppose that little green men with antennae and buggy eyes exist, ok? The Universe is big enough to accomodate them. But hey! What are the ODDS?

Do you believe that there is a teapot floating around the asteroid belt, too small for any current technology to visualize? Do you believe there is no invisible pink unicorn in your closet or underwear drawer? Not believing an entity exists when there is no requirement for the entity to exist is not the same as believing the entity exists.

In summary, you are dead wrong, and the only catch 22 is your pigheadedness. You are the type of person who defines things to fit his needs. You do not have faith; you have dogma.

Why do I bother! You do understand that this is a Q and A board, right? If someone asks about atheism, I answer. There's no battle about it. And no...it's NOT exactly the same, it's exactly the opposite.

atheist

The Atheist Bible, it could be said, has but one word: "THINK." - Emmett Fields

I know there is no god. I do not have 'faith' in it, that is ridiculous. Your logic is tragically flawed, but you have convinced yourself you are on to some mind blowing concept.

You are not.

This crap has been in R&S since its inception. We have no faith. We are rational and reasonable people. As such we do not believe in invisible flying creatures. If you think believing such nonsense is rational, thats your mental illness.

TO be real they do believe in FSM and that FSM created the whole universe. if you look closely you'll see images of FSM on mountains and rivers and everywhere. Of course FSM did not want losers to believe in him so he made the earth look like it evolved so that only the highly intelligent people can figure out that FSM made it.
