I spent all of yesterday typing up work on Mircosoft Word 2007, the autosave feature was on so i stupidly did not manually save my work all day. I put my pc in hibernation mode so i could get something to eat and when i got back i had troubles trying to turn the pc back on which resulted in me restarting my pc.
When i opened Microsoft Word i discovered my work had not been auto saved meaning i'd lost all off my work done that day. I went on to the microsoft help page, using information there i manage to track the location of my autosaved work, it was an ASD. file, only thing is Word will not let me open the ASD file as it says it is uncompatible. any ideas??????

Help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks in advance!

This is a hard lesson to learn, but in future you will save early on with a name, make sure autorecovery is set down to about 4 minutes so you won't lose more than that if you forget to resave as you continue to work. I presume you have looked in Recent Documents for the missing work, or in My Documents just to see if you have any documents titled doc1, doc2 etc which could be the missing file.
If this should happen again in the future, no consolation or answer to present problem, instead of going into hibernation, simple turn off by keeping button pressed in, to fool machine into thinking there's power failure and then when you turn on hopefully document will be autorecovered and showing in lefthand task pane. However, you say the work has saved as an asd file. Why not right click on it down to rename and see if you can name it something.doc thereby changing it to Word format and see what happens. Good luck.

why not try this method:
1. Locate the folder in which you last saved the missing file.
2. Search for files with the .wbk file name extension.

If you find any files that have the name "Backup of" followed by the name of the missing file, follow these steps.
1) Start Word 2007.
2) Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Open.
3) In the Files of type list, click All Files.
4) Click the backup file that you found, and then click Open.

Normally the autosave will save the file with a "~" as the first character in the file name. Do a search for all doc files that start with the ~ sign ( type in: ~*.doc ). Hopefully your work will be amoung the ~ files that Windows finds.

Another good reason to switch to Open Office; when you restart open document recovery will swing into action and automatically recover your work. also open office is free, and is years ahead of MS Office. PDF files can be written easily from a document etc.

To recover an unsaved document after you've restarted the computer is next to impossible. Of course, nothing is ever really deleted, but you'll need a professional to recover what you've lost. I suggest you learn from your mistake and set to work retyping the lost material.

Usually Word documents are saved in a Temp directory e.g.:

c:\Documents and Settings\Your name\Local Settings\Temp.

the actual file you were typing could be called something like:

~DT21E0.tmp

ASD = Auto Save Document

I suspect it does auto-save.

You can restore the work, go to Microsoft Restore , its somewhere in your control panel and restore the computer to that particular date and time, but I'm still not sure it will work because you didnt save the file you just depended on the auto save.
