I am schedule to have arthroscopic knee surgery on 08-28-07.I am currently on 40mg prednisone for another condition. Is it safe to be on the prednisone and have surgery?
I won't be off the prednisone until they switch me over to methotrexate and I know that I can't have surgery while on that.
Thanks

You need to ask the doctor who prescribed the prednisone.

What is prednisone?

Prednisone is a steroid. Prednisone prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. Prednisone also suppresses the immune system.
Prednisone is used as an anti-inflammatory or an immunosuppressant medication. Prednisone treats many different conditions such as allergic disorders, skin conditions, ulcerative colitis, arthritis, lupus, psoriasis, or breathing disorders.
Prednisone may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

i think it wouldn't be safe. there's greater risk for infection due to the anti inflammatory effects of the prednisone which also means diminished capability of our body to fight possible bacterial infection. but the last word is always with your doctor so feel free to ask before undergoing the surgery.

You need to ask both the doctor doing the surgery and the doctor that prescribed it.

there are risks inherent with any surgery, your surgeon is the one to ask if the surgery while on pred is acceptable risk.
