i am thinking of buying a diesel fueled passat... but i dont know what that means... can anyone tell me.. is that like normal gas or is it different... is diesel fuel available in all gas stations(particularly in miami)?

I have a couple co-workers who have had diesel mercedes benzs and not all gas stations have diesel fuel and in some rare instances you may have to stop at truck stops to get it. In some areas the price is slightly less than gas but in most places near me it either the same or higher than gas. It is based on crude oil like gasoline but it is a different chemical entirely. You cannot put gas into a diesel engine or diesel into a gas engine under any circumstances. Basically, gas burns in an engine because it is ignited by the electric spark from a spark plug while diesel ignites from just the high pressure force of compression. There are thousands of different gas engines and thousands of different diesel engines and neither one fundamentally gets better gas mileage than the other on the whole. However, diesel engines usually generate more torque and at a lower rpm which is more useful for street driving and driving in traffic. If you are looking at the TDI diesel passat that engine is known to get better gas mileage than the gas passat engines but can be a little underpowered if you like to drive aggressively.
Also, to clear something up that another answerer put in. Diesel in the US is fundatmentally more pollutive (ie dirtier) than gas engines because the diesel in the US is far less refined than gas and less refined than european diesel engines. That is why the Cailfornia Air Resources Board (CARB) which sets the most stringent car emissions standards would like to gradually reduce the amount of diesel engines on the road. That is also why you see thick black smoke coming from many diesel trucks. The diesel fuel in Europe is more refined than US diesel and probably makes an equal amount of pollution to gas engines.

some will have it, and some will not. you'll probably find it enough to be a reasonable thing, but its not as convenient
A diesel engine lasts a lot longer than a gasoline one. Right now diesel fuel is a little cheaper than gasoline, and you tend to get a little better gas mileage from a diesel engine, so they are becoming more popular again. so I would expect more stations to offer diesel fuel in the coming years

Diesel has changed a lot! In 2007, the EPA changed diesel regulations so they'll be pretty much as clean as cars. This isn't reducing the number of diesel cars, in fact a bunch of new diesel engines and cars are being introduced.
The fact that diesels can run biodiesel, a biofuel that actually works (and is both good for the environment and oil imports) - is just better news yet.

About 1/3 locally here, Diesel is a different weight and quality of fuel; burns hotter and cleaner and you will get better mileage if you can find the stations. Most big trucks run on it, so there will always be a pump near a truck stop

Not all gas station carry it, but in a large city such as Miami I am sure you will not have an issue finding one.
Diesel fuel is just a different type of fuel.......gets better gas milage but thats all I know of it. Hopefully someone will go into more detail for you.

No,most stations off the main roads do not,however you can always find it at truck stops on the interstates.A lot of stations in small farming areas have diesel fuel due to the amount of farm machinery in those areas.Diesel engines last longer and require less maintenance than gasoline engines,and also they last a lot longer.the price of diesel fuel may be a little more per gal. than gasoline in areas that use a lot of it.The real up side of a diesel engine is the longer life and lower maintenance when compared to gasoline engines.

I've never been to a gas station (except in tiny little remote towns) that didn't also have diesel.
fyi...my sister-in-law had a diesel fueled car (I don't remember what the car was) and she hated the diesel.

Most do. 95% of gas stations have diesel. Anyone who says otherwise needs to take a look around lol. Diesel is everywhere.

You will only be able to use diesel fuel.
You can find it at a majority of gas stations.
Most common is the different "unleaded" (various octanes)gases.
