A mythical ideal.
Love is an emotion, not a substance. It is actually a mixture of various emotions which can include respect, trust, like-mindedness, familiarity, lust, common interests, kinship, gratefulness and so on. My love for my mother has more kinship, gratefulness, familiarity, and respect. My love for my fiancee has more common interests, lust, respect, and like-mindedness. You can't really compare the two and say one is purer than the other. Even if you could, it would still be a subjective call and the idea of "pure love" would still be meaningless in any objective sense.

You can get all metaphysical with this question, but I'm going another way:
Practically, day-by-day, pure love is a decision.
It's a decision you make every day, no matter how many warm fuzzies or sweet butterflies are in your heart, to be the best you can be.
Be the best you can be for who?
For yourself, for the people you've decided to have a love relationship with, and for God: These are the people you love.
The "in love" feeling, the limerance, the warmn'n' fuzzies, are all fine and good. But emotions come and go with no apparent reason. Pure love comes from your mind, not your "soul", except in sappy love songs on the radio.
If love isn't a conscious decision you make to live a certain way every day of your life... then it isn't pure love.
It's infatuation, or hormones, or lust, or gratitude, or maybe a million other things.
M. Scott Peck said "The opposite of love isn't hate. It's laziness."

pure love has no strings attached. You want nothing in return and you don't love to tell yourself how good you are. Pure love is without thought, it springs naturally out of your soul, not your ideas. Pure love is mystical, eternal and spiritual. OK?
