I don't like Hi Point's, either, they are ugly and less than reliable. They're cheap, however, and that's the main attraction.
I think that they're easy to manufacture, so you don't have to worry about looks, and therefore cheaper to make and sell.
Cheap guns tend to be marketed to criminals. Taurus, Hi Point, Tec-9, MAC-10, AK-47, etc.

People crack me up with their idiocy. You point out how ugly a Hi-point is, yet fail to mention one of the most popular, but no less hideous autos Glocks. There seems to be 3 groups of gun buyers: gun snobs (whom only buy customized Kimber 45's), practical people, and wannabes. I am a practical person. I wanted a hand gun to shot rarely and not break the bank on. I choose a Hi-Point compact 9mm. The price was right, and the gun works. Anyone whom trashes the gun has never taken the time to actually shoot one or to even read the reviews of it. I've put well over 600 rounds of both hi and lo end ammo through and only had 1 failure to extract. That's pretty damn impressive. Everyone I know whom has it, loves it and has the same things to say about it. When the only complaint you have is that it's ugly, you must feel bad because you over spent on a gun that is no more accurate or lethal. Not only that, if you had anything other than a pea-sized brain, you'd know why the Hi-Points are big and cheap - they use a blow-back system that requires the slide to be much bigger (but a lot more reliable because it's a less complicated system). Do your home before you spout off half truths.

I agree totally with [x] Rebel & boker_magnum! I own 2 Hi-Points 9mm & 40 S&W. Two of the best pistols I have owned. And I have owned many. I don't by guns because they are pretty,I buy them because they work! I have never let anyone shoot them that were not impressed with the accuracy and dependability of these weapons.

>>But there almost has to be a reason why these are so big and stupid.<<
1.) They're blowback operation which requires a big, heavy slide for safe, reliable operation.
2.) They're cast from alloys weaker than steel meaning they require greater mass to achieve adequate strength.
They certainly aren't my cup o' tea either, but if they put guns in the hands of people who need them, at a reasonable price, what's it to me?
