The cause of war is ego, the belief that one side is better than the other. It's the only way that leaders can justify the murder of human beings...
The fuel for this type of egotism, anger and hatred, can come from greed, which in turn arises from jealousy.
Religious beliefs are sometimes used as an excuse, but it is still the basic "I'm better than you" attitude, with a twist. This time it's "My god is better that your god".

It's both of those things. Most wars are based on greed, but religion is frequently used as an excuse. The Crusades were "holy wars," talk about an oxymoron, but at heart, it was a fight over who would control Jerusalem. When Henry VIII took England away from the control of the Catholic church, the first thing he did was loot all the monastaries, take the gold, etc. And, of course, the whole reason he did that was because he wanted to marry Anne Boleyn and the Pope wouldn't let him divorce Catherine of Aragon. So, an entire country changed religions because of one man's obsession and greed. Apparently, all of this was OK with god.

Undoubtedly its both at times and often at the same time. I think we have seen plenty of examples of this in Christianity and see it now in the middle east. Sunni, Shia; Muslim and Jews. There is no doubt in my mind that religious prejudices and the need and desire for each that their own beliefs predominate are a big part of the problem. I have seen the different factions just here on Yahoo going at each other with venom. I also think there is greed involved and political people who rile the people up using religion for their own agendas.

Religious "understanding" is only possible in polytheistic credos. That's why "inter-religious dialogue" between the three main monotheistic religions is a useless farce. So yes, religion is one of the causes of war.
But is not the only one. There is greed, power lust, political idealism, etc.

Too much religious understanding, combined with greed has caused a lot of wars.
But a lot of them have just been caused because people didn't like the way the people across the border selfishly hoarded their women, slaves, livestock, and other property.

How bout An empire of false religion such as hmmmm Islam going against The Word of God Jesus Christ and his Holy Bible, which Muhammad took up on a mountain at 40 years old and altered into his own Arabic version so he could convince everyone he was a prophet to conquer Medina then Mecca and regain his long dead parents royal heritage. Jesus said beware of FALSE PROPHETS and all others before him were not the messiah and anyone after should follow him and no other. Truly Muhammad must have been an nonbeliever to think he could rewrite the Holy Bible!!!

Pure Greed- this war is accomplishing nothing more than fulfilling a coward's greed for Power & Money- think about it- Have the American people really become safer? Have our freedoms been protected? NO- We are no safer than we were in 2001 & we have had many rights taken away- who has sacrificed for this war? How about those who have had their families torn apart ! Sad part is- what did they really fight for?

Religious misunderstandings may be a cause of war, but even the misunderstandings are related to greed of man. He wants it his way no matter what the cost.

Lack of religious understanding is the cause. All religions spread the message of peace and kindness. If we were to follow correctly (and not to the point of becoming extremists) the teachings of our individual faiths, the world can perhaps be a better place.

Where was the religion when 7 million people were burnt alive in Japan to test a bomb?
Where was the religion; when Hitler decided to cover half the earth with blood?
