I-9 is probaby what they are filling in. Take it; but I don't think it'll fill the requirement is that is what they are doing.

Get over to SS office on the way back and GET IT REPLACED>

It depends on how much you want this job. Locate your nearest Social Security office, call them and explain that you need your SS card for a new job and when is the soonest they can do this. Also, ask them what documents they will need you to bring. All jobs in the States ask for this.

Please look at this website as they also talk about identity theft. If you lost your SS card (and someone else found it), they could be using your name and number to secure credit that more than likely they won't be paying for thereby sabotaging your credit history. It may be a good idea to check it while you're getting a replacement card.

If you read the employment form you fill out, you will see where the employer is bound by law to see (and make a copy of) your SS card and at least one other ID. They will not (and can not) hire you without it. Contact SS and get a new card. Will take a couple weeks to obtain.

It's for the Federal I-9 form. There is a list of acceptable forms of ID here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-9_(form)
