Because it is a major life event. If you did not get nervous there would be something wrong with you.

that's when one person wants to share a whole life with you. just with you and ...uhh...the kids you might have. i mean its something special.and whoever asks the question is nervous because he/she's not sure if you will say: Yes, I do..i mean it's quite a big turn in your life.

coz people are afraid of rejection ofcourse! and also because your asking this person to be with you for the rest of your life and that idea can be quite overwhelming

because it is a life changing situation, and we never know what the answer will be...yes or no? It is very anxiety provoking...good luck though, and I know they'll say yes!

Fear of loosing some one we LOVE.

people tend to get nervous when taking risks because we are unsure what the outcome will be
