I have a Sony DVD recorder/player plugged into a wide screen tv. When I watch a DVD the picture will suddenly change from widescreen to 4:3. If I press 'System Menu' on the remote once to get the menu up and then another time to get rid of it, the picture goes back to widescreen. 10-20mins later it does it again! The player is set to widescreen mode etc, so what else could it be?

Make sure your TV is not set to auto size the aspect ratio. Make sure it is set to widescreen or 16:9 aspect ratio.

Hi,mate .Could you give me the exact model number of you Sony DVD Recorder / Player. In the meantime the problem might be in your DVD / Recorder / Player Settings. All Players have aspect ratio settings. Go into your Players' Settings and try to change them. Let me know how you go.
