Right, help needed. My car tax runs out on 31 July this year, my MOT certificate is valid until the 2 August this year. I can't get my car in for it's service and MOT until the 2nd August as the garage is booked up until then. Can I still tax my car for a year using this MOT certificate as don't want to be driving around for 2 days with no tax? I need use of my car on the 1st August but don't want to take the risk of having no tax even for 1 day. Looked on the DVLA website but can't find anything that says the length of time an MOT certificate needs to be valid for getting a new tax disc! Help?

YES you can tax you car as long as you MOT as not run out, does not matter if the mot as one day to run one week or one month it is still valid, so yes you can tax your car for 6 or 12 months the day before the mot runs out

Yes, the DVLA don't like it but even if there is only a couple of days left to run on your MOT it is still acceptable.

It's also worth knowing that you do not need an MOT certificate to take your car for an MOT test or repairs for MOT. It may however affect your insurance - you will only have third-party insurance if you have an accident on the way to, or back from, an MOT testing center.

Although this answers completely contradicts the answers given by every other contributor, I have been told by a post office employee that they are told not to issue a tax disc if the MOT has less than one month to run. I don't know if this is the case - I've never tried to do it - and I don't know if applying online would avoid this problem although I would say that I tried last week to apply for tax online but the application was refused because my insurance had been renewed a few days earlier and the DVLA system hadn't been updated to include the new information.

As I understand it, the MOT has to be in date on the first day of the new tax. You seem to be OK provided you tax the car before the 2nd Aug.

But knowing the people you encounter at the post office etc. they may query it, you just need to explain it is booked in for MOT on 2nd.

Yes it`s OK but next time have car s MOT done a month
before expiry date then when it passes they will
give you MOT certificate for thirteen months.

Yes you can go ahead and tax your car on its current MOT certificate. The testing guy may remark how fortunate you are to have a few days left in which to do it.

Let's hope it passes the test.

I'd go to the post office and tax the car as normal. No reason why your MOT shouldn't be valid.

You can tax it tomorrow because the MOT is still valid.

Try booking your car into another garage because if you drive the car without a indate tax disc or iwithout a valid m.o.t.then your insurance would be in.valid should you have an accident You would also be breaking the law and get points on your licence. Why dont you catch a bus or get a taxi Dont risk it
