Mrs. is a woman who is married and uses her husband's last name. Miss is an unmarried woman, but a lot of us think it sounds awfully young. I hate being called Miss because I'm not ten anymore. If you don't know for sure, use Ms. She'll correct you if she prefers something else.

Miss and Mrs. are used with women and indicate their marital status. Ms is used if the woman feels that this is not relevant to her as a person. Most women don't really care one way or the other, but many find the contrast of men's. Mr....no status indicated vs. Miss/Mrs to be annoying...
They have a point, I think!

Ms. is appropriate for divorced women who no longer wish to be referred to as Mrs. and for single women who are over about 35. Miss. is really more for younger single women and girls. I have friends who are 30+ professionals and use Ms. while others don't mind Miss. It depends on every person.

Ms was designed as a term attempting to get even with men for having only one term describing them, whereas they had either Miss or Mrs. to define them, which they felt was rather degrading. "No fair" , they thought, so, around 1973, they attempted to scuttle BOTH Miss and Mrs., in order to use Ms exclusively...
So I would say use Ms exclusively, unless you want to go backwards.

From my own understanding, Ms is used to address single or married woman. Also to be on the safe side of addressing a woman.

Ms is the only correct way to address a woman. Anything else is just obnoxious.

Some people use Ms so that they don't have to give out their marital status, or it can be used when you don't know the marital status of someone and are greeting them, or writing to them formally. It is also used by women who are divorced or seperated...

It's up to the individual concerned - there are no hard and fast rules. But I would never assume anyone wants to be known as Ms unless they specifically tell me. Personally, I HATE it!

Ms is appropriate on all occasions unless the woman in question has expressed a preference for another form of address, or you know that she has a superior (as in 'higher level') title, for example 'Dr' or 'Governor'.
Best wishes :-)
