Whenever my mother sneezes, unfortunately for her and for us, she breaks wind. My mother is elderly so at her age, every fart is somewhat dicey. Is there anything we can do to prevent this socially crippling affliction?

How thoughtful of you to take this up on behalf of your poor elderly mother. This problem must be a nightmare for her, imagine if she were in a quiet are like, for example, the public library when she needed to sneeze! I expect she would always be hoping for a silent bomber but no doubt it would be a great rumbler that everyone would hear. Has she been barred from any public buildings? Has she considered hypnosis to deal with the problem? The hypnotist would not be able to stop the farts but he could make it so that she just doesn't care any more. The hypnotist I have in mind has done a lot of work with old ladies like this and has formed a farting choir where they play a variety of songs on their clappers. They are soon to release (forgive the pun) a cd called 'Blowin in the Wind'. Please give your poor old mum my best regards.

I must say that I'm concerned for your poor mum. If she is having continence issues then she really should see her doctor or continence nurse at the local hospital. A diet high in processed or fatty foods can cause colon problems and obviously she feels very strongly about how embarrasing the situation is. If she is having other bowel problems like loose motions regularly, losing blood from her back passage and maybe mucus, she must have this investigated. I hope that her problems resolve and I have been of some help for her. Offer my best wishes and good luck for the future.

no probably not. A good way to stop a sneeze is to run your tongue back and forth across the back of your top teeth (why I don't know but I heard that is what the queen does so she doesn't sneeze. true or not I do not know but it works). At least this will stop the sneeze that leads to the fart

Bean-O is great for adding to food just before eating it, so there's no gassiness to deal with. It contains an enzyme that keeps gas from forming. It's sold in the grocery/department stores.

Farting is caused by eating foods that are both acidic and basic such as beans, It can also be caused funnily enough by loose dentures, or smoking ,theese foods should also be avoided:

raffinose - a complex sugar found in beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, other vegetables, and whole grains.

lactose - a natural sugar found in milk and milk products, such as cheese and ice cream, and in processed foods, such as bread, cereal, and salad dressing.
fructose - a sugar found in onions, artichokes, pears, and wheat, and is also used as a sweetener in some soft drinks and fruit drinks.

sorbitol - a sugar found naturally in fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, and prunes, and is also used as an artificial sweetener in many dietetic foods and sugar-free candies and gums.

starches - most starches, including potatoes, corn, noodles, and wheat produce gas as they are broken down in the large intestine. (Rice is the only starch that does not cause gas.)
soluble fiber - fiber that dissolves easily in water and takes on a soft, gel-like texture in the intestines; is found in oat bran, beans, peas, and most fruits.

insoluble fiber - fiber, such as that found in wheat bran and some vegetables, which passes essentially unchanged through the intestines and produces little gas

Well, you or she would like to find out why she has flatulence. Could it be the food she is eating or is she not digesting as she should? She may consider going to see an Herbalist if there is one in her area who may support her digestive system and perhaps in turn help reduce her flatulence.

Really the only thing she can do is change her diet. I have found a great site, which is a good tool for help with embarrasing illnesses.

If the change in diet doesn't help then get her to see her GP.

Good luck

leave her alone and at her age she is entitled and it should be accepted as it is and don't make a big deal out of it, its will only make her feel bad if you start to notice it..at her age she deserve to pass some wind and get rid of those gas that she have so as to feel better after.
