To jemhasb.. O.K. I didn't include the whole quote but even if I had it wouldn't have altered the meaning of the question.

Yes.

"The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good." Dr. Samuel Johnson

"It is the deed that teaches, not the name we give it. Murder and capital punishment are not opposites that cancel one another, but similars that breed their own kind." George Bernard Shaw

What? You are right about toothless and blind IF your quote was right.

However! The whole quote is "An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, vengeance is mine says the Lord I will repay thee". Yes, it is from the bible and, as with many bible verses, the quote is only half there.

You want another miss quote from the bible? Well, I'll give you one anyway. "Money is the root of all evil" The correct quote is "The love of money is the root of all evil".

Correct quotes make them much easier to understand and apply.

Yes, In that case all would be blind and toothless. The point is if one harms another, they should be equally harmed. "What's good for the goose is good for the gander".

If you get in a fight and break someones nose, then society would get to break your nose...In society where used it's a great deterrent. Lot less theft when you see a bunch of one armed people walking around. We are slightly too weak to implement such measure.

Yup pretty much because its a cycle that never ends and if you play an eye for a eye noone will have any eyes left...I like my eyes so i dont go by that lol.

Only if yer running around poking people in the eye and pulling their teeth.
If you're nice, you get to keep your eyes and teeth.

jemhasb is correct, of course, but fails to point out that the bible is nothing but misquotes, untruths and complete fabrications. this is, of course, irrelevant to its blind-faith adherents, but is an important distinction made by intelligent people who think for themselves. a source of inspiration, of course. a tool for learning, absolutely. as is all great literature. we can learn as much from fictional works like the bible as we can from nonfiction. and fictional or not, if we are to quote it, we should get the quotes right, not to mention the lessons. for example, the sin of sodom was not sodomy or rape, but inhospitality.
