So, I need a new battery for the car and decided to upgrade the battery. I have between 800-1000 watts running for the sub and speakers, so would the red top work ok for me? or do I have to go with the yellow top?

If you also plan to use this battery to start the engine, then a red top is the better choice. A yellow top is a good choice as a second battery, used to power the system with the engine off. If you plan to do your listening with the engine running, there's no advantage to a yellow top over a red top battery.

well, the seeing that the yellow top is a deep cycle, and your installing a system, i would be inclined to say that the yellow top will be best for you, especially when the car is off. it will withstand getting drained and recharged much better than the red top with out plate warp-age.
that being said, i agree with the person above who said that you need to look into getting a bigger alternator rated at a higher amperage to KEEP that Optima battery charged, or else it wont matter what battery you are running when you find you cant start your car.

RedTops are way better for caraudio.
Also, a battery upgrade really isn't needed. Batteries are only good for when the car is off. What you need to consider first is an alternator upgrade.
For now, do the Big3 Upgrade in 4g or larger wire:

If you are going to install it in the engine get the red one, if you install in the trunk get the yellow top. The red one is designed for areas of vibration like in the engine compartment.

if you listen to your stereo alot with the engine off, then yeah go for the yellow top. if not, then go for the red top. when the engine is on, a yellow top works no better then a red.
good luck

They both have extreme resistance to vibration, I just purchased the yellow top at sams club for only $160 its an awesome battery I also have around 800watts rms in amplification.
OPTIMA RedTop batteries are built to withstand the abuse Trucks, SUV's and 4x4's experience on and off-road. SPIRALCELL Technology immobilizes the internal components of the battery, enabling OPTIMA batteries to withstand incredible amounts of vibration.
If your battery is used in vehicles that demand extra reliability and performance, or if you just take pride in getting the best performance out of your vehicle, OPTIMA RedTop batteries deliver the performance you demand.
The OPTIMA YellowTop
OPTIMA YellowTop batteries are made for the extremes. If you have an extreme vehicle, you expect high performance. Whether your vehicle is made to take the abuse of off-road driving or cranking out decibels, you need more from your battery. OPTIMA batteries with patented SPIRALCELL® Technology deliver that performance. The deep cycle characteristic of this technology coupled with its extreme resistance to vibration provides performance vehicles with the repetitive power they need in a spill-proof package.
If your vehicle has a lot of accessories like running lights, high-performance stereo/AV system, winches, or hydraulics, your vehicle demands more from its battery. OPTIMA YellowTOP batteries provide the extra performance and deep cycling capability that your vehicle demands.

I say the the yellow top because it stands out more. Unless you get some spark plug wires that are red, then get red. etc.
