I think you don't really have dating in the India (Indian) culture as we do in the western cultures. When we date, we go out with a person in order to get to know them and see where it may lead. From the Indian men I know from working with them, they have arranged marriages, that are more like a business deal between families, and the men don't even get a chance to meet their brides before they are married. They seem to be quite happy, even so, that their families have found them suitable brides, and one young man I know went home with the biggest smile on his face a couple of weeks ago to get married to a woman he never met nor dated. He and she will have sex before they get to know one another on a personal level. To me, that is quite shocking! To them, it is the normal and natural sequence of events.

I'll try my best. But I think it started when the western culture started coming to India. Since it's culturally frowned upon, when Indians date, they don't deviate too much. They just go out, and have fun...it usually doesn't escalate into a serious, sexual relationship like the western dating culure does. I think Indians still try to hold to cultural values, even if they date...I think they just explore feelings, and what they've seen and heard. But westerners, just go for what feels good more often then not, and goes on with their life. Just my opinion though

my definition for dating is... any outing with a partner which involves some kind of romance , now you need to define what is called romance. Holding his/her hand while walking aimlessly or holding the partner around while walking, hugs, kisses, and going little beyond all are part of romance for me.

Also dating can between the people who is considering continuing future relationship (In India most of the dating belong to this) or could be of casual dating (happens by getting a partner at office at the end of week end, meeting a stranger at shopping mall or a dance club etc) and it is very rare in India i suppose. There is no commitment from both partners beyound the date in casual dating.

I have one blog on casual dating in http://360.yahoo.com/chennaideva, please check it out...
