There are a lot of good (no pud intended )comments here but I'll throw this in the pot. For how long I don't know however let's remember that in the Garden Of Eden there was no evil there, in fact God use to walk with Adam in the garden. One other thing we should not forget that after the end of the world evil will be no more for those who have chosen God and not the ways of the devil.

pain and suffering give apprication...have you ever seen a rich kid that gets everything they want? and then they dont appricate the little things.Have you ever seen a poor man become wealthy and how he treats his property? I ask you this what would happen if everyone was all a pure ray of sunshine what about honesty then because say you had a friend who asked you how they looked in a dress and they looked horrid in that outfit would you a. tell them that they look bad ( and make them feel bad) or B. be dishonest and tell them that they look great both are 2 "evils" I am not saying that i like "evil" I am saying all life has to have balance. I am saying without dark you would never know what was light.
plus define evil everyone has a diffrent prospective if you cannot define evil into a logical concept a black and white of what is wrong and right how would you say that evil cant live without good...some people would say a asteroid hitting the earth is evil but realy its just replinishing the earth and renewing the atmosphere because the dust and change to the atmosphere would help polution some would say an earthquake is evil

Traditionally this question would be handled by asking the simple question: If there wasn't any evil, would we even know what good was? So, basically for every idea or notion in the world, there must be an opposite for it to contrast. Some might say that this is just a problem of language, but it also works in the question of free will. If all we could commit were good acts, then there wouldn't be free will - so we would basically be robots. So, in order to have free will in this world, there has to be evil and good.

Ideas and concepts are two different things. Ideas can exist without opposites. The concept of good cannot exist without the concept of evil because they are opposites on a spectrum. Although love (as defined by actions) could exist without hate, it would no longer hold the same meaning for us. It would no longer be "love". It would simply be the state of being in which all things existed.
A practical example is to consider light and dark. There really is no such thing as "dark"; rather, it is the absence of light. Using the electromagnetic spectrum (focusing on visible light range), it is known that white light is the presence of all wavelengths. Black is the absence of any waves. Dark is the absence of light.
So while they might "exist" on their own, they would not be same same thing. So they wouldn't exist in the same form that they exist if their opposite exists. The meaning of good would be null and void without an opposite concept that we can compare it to...

Evil, is the good done at a wrong time, or in the wrong place, or to the wrong amount.
In that light, there is no true good or evil, and in fact there is no contrast of both either. One man's good can be another's evil.
I would say that for a given human (or any creature) his/her good is that which fills his/her soul with joy. Evil, is that which makes you feel dark and bad inside. Therefore, both will always exist, because even if you do a lesser good, when you could have indeed done a greater good, a soul attuned to purity would feel sadness.

Cold does not exist. Cold is merely a term we use to describe the absence of heat. We define the complete absence of heat as 'Absolute Zero'--Add any amount of heat, and cold goes away.
Darkness does not exist. Darkness is merely a term we use to describe the absence of light. No matter how intense the darkness, even a tiny light will penetrate it.
The same can be said for good and evil. good is not dependent on evil at all; rather the definition of evil is the absence of good.
In short, evil cannot exist without good, but good can exist without evil.

Ain't necessarily so.
The world right now is run by Satan.
(2 Corinthians 4:4) among whom the god of this system of things has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, that the illumination of the glorious good news about the Christ, who is the image of God, might not shine through.
But in God's new Kingdom [ Matt.6; 9,10] with Jesus as the King, there will only be GOOD.
Evil will have been eliminated;
(Psalm 37:9) For evildoers themselves will be cut off, But those hoping in Jehovah are the ones that will possess the earth.
(Psalm 37:11) But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, And they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace.
(Psalm 37:29) The righteous themselves will possess the earth, And they will reside forever upon it.
(Psalm 37:34) Hope in Jehovah and keep his way, And he will exalt you to take possession of the earth. When the wicked ones are cut off, you will see [it].

No, I disagree with the premise of your question. It is NOT necessary for evil to exist in order that good exist.
My proof is children; and how parents feel about them. Most all people want ONLY good for their children. Hate DOES NOT intensify the meaning of love. Ask your 4 year old if they want to be beaten so they like hugs better.
God ALLOWS EVIL to exist because he wants us to have freedom of choice.

Yin cannot exist without yang
positive and negative are sometimes necessary to creat action.
Keeping things in perspective - man cannot be without woman, earth cannot be without light and dark, sun and rain, positive and negative electrical connections are required.
Man was given free will - to kill or not kill, to love or not love, to hate or not hate, to laugh or not laugh etc.
There is an old saying "help me to change that which I can and to recognise which I cannot".
One could not appreciate joy perhaps without knowing sadness - perhaps in mans' limited modern day thinking, could not realise he knows that joy feels good and is good without also knowing sorrow and sadness.
Man creates the evil and the Good - it is mans' choice.

Good can exist without evil but what is the point of existance when it does not hold much weight. In order to value good and not taking it for granted, evil is present to constantly remind us of our good fortunes and our doings in how we effect society. I fell that God give us misfortunes and challengess for that reason.
