in the time of Elizabeth the first, the white make-up they wore was poisonous.
there have been times when women would have the last few ( partial) ribs removed surgically, to give them a smaller waist, more of an hourglass shape.
I had friends who started smoking to loose weight. Then got addicted, and now have all sorts of lung problems.
If you wear high heels all the time, your Achilles tendon shrinks, and you can't be comfortable wearing flats, or even lower heels.
IN China, women used to bind their feet, to keep the feet looking small and feminine. but they caused the feet to be hideously deformed, and so painful that many women could not walk.

Foot binding!!!
Footbinding (Simplified Chinese: 缠足; Traditional Chinese: 纏足; Pinyin: chánzú, literally "bound feet") was a custom practiced on young females for approximately one thousand years in China, beginning in the 10th century and ending in the early 20th century. In Chinese foot binding, young girls' feet, usually at age 6 but often earlier, were wrapped in tight bandages so that they could not grow and develop normally; they would, instead, break and become highly deformed, not growing past 4-6 inches (10-15 cm). As the girl reached adulthood, her feet would remain small and dysfunctional, prone to infection, paralysis, and muscular atrophy. This was initially a common practice only in the wealthiest parts of China, particularly in North China. However, by the late Qing Dynasty, foot binding had become popular among people of all social classes except the poorest, who needed able-bodied women to work the fields. Today, it is a prominent cause of disability among elderly Chinese women.
While bound feet were considered desirable by some men, a misconception is that men found the deformed foot, in the flesh, erotic. [2] In general, men never saw a woman's bound feet, as they were always concealed within tiny "lotus shoes". Feng Xun is recorded as stating, "If you remove the shoes and bindings, the aesthetic feeling will be destroyed forever." Some scholars have claimed that the erotic effect was a function of the tiny steps and swaying walk of a woman whose feet had been bound. The very fact that the bound foot was concealed from men's eyes was, in and of itself, sexually suggestive.

corsets!
some people are so keen on having a tiny waist that they will force themselves into these tiny things, forgetting that they actually have to fit vital organs into that space. It can result in some serious injuries, and damage to said organs.
not entirely sure of what problems are, but if you go somewhere like wikipedia, they'll probably have some information.

i really like the corset idea.
Women would wear it to make them look skinny. But it really endangers your organs. I also heard that a long time ago, women would still wear corsets if they were pregnant! Imagine the harm it can cause the baby!

Well, it may be off topic, but when you join the military they give you a cool uniform (or they used to, the digital velcro ones look stupid) and your probably going to get yourself killed by wearing it. You mine as well wear a bullseye, this of course assuming you get deployed.
