Black is NOT a color. it was only contexted with the word 'color' because it can be seen in crayon boxes and paint jars. Can you find it on the color wheel? No. It can't be found there. Therefore, its not a color. And that includes white too. ^_^ In terms of science, the visible light has all the colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. In this color spectrum, it is said that when we see white, all the colors in the visible light are being REFLECTED. While black is the ABSORPTION of all this colors. That's why when you mix all the primary colors, you'll get black. ^_^

All the 'Black' pigments are very dark colours {including gray}, that are used for black. Black is actually the absence of colours or light, so a true black colour could exist, but only at the boundary of Black holes or simialr.

shades are the varying degrees of gray from white to black.. in reference to the black being the absence of color.. that only applies to light (in light, the primary colors are magenta cyan and green, combine all and you get white) , when working in color theory (where the primary colors are red, blue and yellow), black is the combination of all colors while white is the lack of color, shades of a color is when black is added to a pigment and when you add white, you get a tint. black is more well known as a color simply because it isnt pointed out in grade school the difference that are pointed out in color theory

To me, as a painter, black is NOT a colour.
It is used to darken ("cool") colours that would otherwise be too warm or too light.
P.S. You don't need ivory blak or whatever black on your palette: you can "manufacture" black shades with combinations of brown/green, brown/blue depending of what you need.

In art its still considered a color and also in screenprinting, black is concidered a color too.

shade is when you add black to (example) yellow and that color gets darker.

Tint is when you add white to another color to make it lighter
