I am not a dentist, but common sense tells me that...

1. When you lay down at night to sleep the more blood goes to your head and increases
sensitivity.

2. Like with colds and other ailments, your body is more rundown by the end of the day and susceptible to the effects on your immune system.

3. During the day you will be preoccupied with the necessities of life and more apt to ignore or forget the pain. Adrenaline and physical movements also mask pain.

Because you are just laying there doing nothing to distract yourself from the pain. During the day, you are doing stuff and don't pay as much attention to the pain.
